Sounders advance to the CONCACAF quarterfinal round with a 2-1 win over the Whitecaps.

Seattle Sounders head coach was adamant in his pregame press conference, saying the Sounders went to Spokane to win.  With a 3-0 aggregate lead entering Leg 2 of their Round of 16 match against the Vancouver Whitecaps, many wondered whether the Sounders would take a conservative approach.

SOUNDERS NEARLY GET  EARLY  GAME

Schmetzer made wholesale lineup changes from Sunday’s MLS match against San Jose. Stefan Frei, Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, Alex Roldan, Cristian Roldan, Snyder Brunell, Albert Rusnák, Paul Arriola, and Danny Musovski replaced Andrew Thomas, Cody Baker, Antino Lopez, Peter Kingston, Nikola Petković, Paul Rothrock, and Georgi Minoungou.

While the lineup was rotated, the objective was the same. True to his word , the Sounders started on the front foot against the Whitecaps and nearly built an insurmountable lead minutes into the game.  Paul Arriola’s pinpoint pass across the Whitecaps goal was blasted right of the goal by a sprinting Albert Rusnak.  A second chance came in the 9th minute, and, similar to the first opportunity, was squandered when Osaze DeRosario’s header went wide of the goal during a corner kick.

WHITECAPS  NARROW THE AGGREGATE LEAD

After the two near misses, the Sounders retreated to a defensive block, which saw the Whitecaps with the lion’s share of the possession. Similar to  Schmetzer, Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sørensen rotated his lineup.  Brian White, Jeevan Badwal, Aziel Jackson, Andres Cubas, and Ralp Priso-Mbongue. Sorenson was looking for more attack-minded play from White, Badwal, and Jackson.  In the 24th minute, Badwal scored the game’s first goal and cast doubt on the outcome of the tie.

SOUNDERS STAY RESOLUTE IN DEFENDING

The goal awakened the Sounders’ commitment to defense.  Frei’s save in the 36th minute kept the score line at 1-0 while the backline led by   Ragen, Cristian Roldan,  Nouhou, and Kossi- Rienzi stayed home, alert, and kept the Whitecaps in front of them. Brunell and Cristian Roldan stayed compact. The Sounders were able to fend off  the Whitecaps and  entered the halftime break down 1-0

SOUNDERS  KEEP WHITECAPS AT BAY

The start of the second half was a stalemate.   This favored the Sounders.

” I told the team at halftime that the guys who started the game are expected to run as hard as they can and give way to subs who will finish the game.” said Schmetzer . ” I enjoy this about about this team. They play together and I enjoy it “

The Whitecaps continued to dominate possession but were unable to find cracks in the Sounders’ fortified defense, which saw all 11 players behind the ball.  Schmetzer pulled the rip cord in the 65th minute and inserted fresh legs and some offensive firepower. Paul Rothrock was inserted for Arriola, Danny Musovski replaced De Rosario, and   Ferreira gave way to Peter Kngston.

DOUBLE   SUB GOALS

Back-to-back goals in a span of five minutes put the game to bed and made   Schmetzer look like King Midas. Kingston’s cross from the right flank was deftly headed into the back of the net by Musovski in the 78th minute. Rothrock’s right-footed blast from the left side sealed the win and advanced the Sounders into the quarterfinal round.
