Seahawks likely to start 2026 season on a Wednesday

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the Seahawks will kick off the 2026 NFL season on Wednesday, September 9th. The opening day of each NFL season is reserved for the defending Super Bowl Champions and has historically been played on Thursday. The NFL’s International Melbourne game in Austria will feature Seahawks foes, the Los Angeles Rams, facing the San Francisco 49ers. That game will be played on Thursday, September 10th, which pushed the Seahawks game back one day to Wednesday Night.

A RARE WEDNESDAY START

In the past 75 years, the NFL has held one other Wednesday season opener. In 2012, the NFL scheduled the Cowboys vs Giants game on Wednesday so it would not conflict with Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at teh Democratic National Convention. Since the Seahawks are the home team, they will play the Cardinals, Cowboys, Giants, Bears, Chiefs, Chargers, or the Patriots. Of the seven opponents, you have to figure a Patriots and Seahawks match-up to open the 2026 season would be too soon.

SOME SHIFTING AROUND WILL NEED TO HAPPEN

For the Seahawks to play on Wednesday, two local teams will need to be good neighbors. The Sounders are scheduled to host Sporting Kansas City at 7:30 pm while the Mariners have a home game with the Texas Rangers at 6:40. While there has been no official agreement, the general feeling is that both teams would be good neighbors and make accommodations for the Seahawks to start their season on Wednesday, September 9th.
