The Seahawks (12-3) are set for Saturday’s battle for the West with the San Francisco 49ers (12-4). Saturday’s game is a rematch of the Week One contest in which the Niners left Lumen Field with a 17-13 victory. Both teams have overcome key injuries, stayed true to their identity. The Seahawks have the No. 2 scoring defense, while the Niners have the No. 4 scoring offense
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR ADEN DURDE
(On what stands out the most about Christian McCaffrey)
“He’s an extremely great athlete and that shows up on the field. His understanding of zones, when to sit down, when to move and how to break away from leverage. You see it all over the tape. He plays the game like a receiver and plays the game like a really good running back too.”
(On creating a game plan for Brody Purdy’s elusiveness)
“You have to look at yourself first. When you’re creating a rush plan, you have to look at who you are, how your players play, and you have to first of all, get on the same page and understand what the achievement is. You don’t want to not rush. The worst thing that can happen is that you all try and stick to a block and you’re just stuck in one position and there’s no pressure at all. We just have to be on the same page, understand our rush lanes, communicate really well, see where the opportunities are and who has the opportunity. When you do that, no one is selfish in those situations. They understand what their role is and how they press the pocket. They’re the times I’ve seen the best success.”
(On Byron Murphy II’s improvement from last season)
“He’s someone we were talking about this morning. I think in two folds as the player, I think he’s always been that player. What’s changed in him is that he’s understood what it takes to be like an elite NFL player, as a professional mindset, how he attacks the day, how he gets his body right, how he takes in the information each day, and how he uses it on the field. I’ve seen him grow in confidence. It’s cool to see him on the field now with the guys. Before he was quite quiet, but now he’s more out of himself just having fun and enjoying the game. I’ve seen him grow a lot. He’s matured a lot.”
(On how DeMarcus Lawrence’s effort on the field has impacted the team)
“I think it impacts the whole defense, not just the young guys. When people play that hard, it’s contagious. When you put the work in day after day, I know Mike (Macdonald) said it to you guys, and I said it to you guys, but he practices like that. He goes through individuals like that. When you put that work in, and guys see that on the outcome on the field, they do it. He’s had a huge impact on this defense, and he just needs to keep doing it.”
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR KLINT KUBIAK
(On turnovers) “
It’s not a number that we’re proud of at all, something that we’re always preaching, things that we’ve got to improve on. Obviously, we want to maximize our possessions and we’re giving away points when we give the ball away. So, whether it’s decision making, throwing the ball, holding onto it, then protecting our quarterback so that we’re not getting sack fumbles. There’s a lot of things that go on there, but something’s got to get better if we want to be a championship team.”
(On Robert Saleh’s defense)
“Every year playing his scheme, is more the same. It’s a really well-coached group that’s very disciplined. They swarm to the football. They turn the ball over and have a lot of respect for what they do. Whether he was with the Jets or back with the Niners (49ers) the last time, he’s a really good coach, and it shows on tape.”
(On if the offense has progressed as he expected or has experienced in the past)
“Yeah, I guess I don’t think about it that way, just from the beginning, you’re just trying to put an offense in and see how good our guys can get. We have goals that we talk about throughout the season for the guys, but it’s about growth and it’s about winning and the players take you where you want to go. We’ve got to get them started, but we have some really impressive personnel that have gotten us to this point. What’s really impressive about them is they’re not satisfied. We know we’ve got a lot of football left to play. This is one more game and then we’ll see what happens when we get in the tournament. But, our guys, John Schneider, has just assembled a really impressive roster of winners.”
(On what determines the hot hands of the running backs)
“I’ve said from the beginning, I see we have two ones as far as our half back. One day it’s K9’s (Kenneth Walker III) day, one day it’s Zach’s (Charbonnet) day. One day it’s going to be Cam Akers’ day, with that third back in there. We’ve always got guys that, when their number is called, they go and perform. Zach had a heck of the game, and it takes everybody to win, that position is no different.”
(On how he chooses between running backs)
“I think we have probably very few things that are just for one guy. Our guys can do it all and we try to get them all reps throughout the game. It just happened the way that it did, but Zach (Charbonnet) played really well. I thought K9 (Kenneth Walker III) played really well too. It’s just how that game went.”
(On if the offense has progressed as he expected or has experienced in the past)
