Huskies blow out Boise State 38-10 to win the LA Bowl

The Washington Huskies took the field for the final time and were looking for their ninth victory of the season Saturday night. The Huskies strapped on their helmets and lined up against the Boise State Broncos in the LA Bowl at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Washington came into the game with a three-game win streak over the Broncos. To extend their winning streak against the Broncos, the Huskies would need to establish a run game , create turnovers, and continue to play good defense. After a sluggish start, Washington found its rhythm in the second quarter and dominated from then on.

Huskies and Broncos feel themselves out in the first quarter

Boise State received the ball first to start the game and had great field position after a strong return by Malik Sherrod. The Broncos started the drive at their own 44-yard line and scored the game’s first points with a five-play, 21-yard field goal drive to go up 3-0 early. Washington responded with a scoring drive of its own. RB Jonah Coleman went on a big 23-yard run to set the Huskies up at the Broncos’ 29. QB Demond Williams later scrambled for 14 yards on third and 13 to get Washington a first down at the seven. The Huskies were unable to find the end zone after Williams was sacked on third down and had to settle for a 33-yard field goal to tie the game. Washington ended the first quarter on a strong note when LB Xe’ree Alexander intercepted Broncos QB Maddux Madsen.

Huskies take control in the second quarter

After trading punts to begin the second quarter, Washington opened up the playbook. On the Huskies’ second possession of the quarter, Demond Williams hit Denzel Boston on a 78-yard touchdown pass.. The Huskies’ defense made another big first-half play when it stopped the Broncos’ offense on 4th down at the 43-yard line. Washington’s offense took advantage of the good field position, scoring a touchdown on the next drive. Williams found WR Dezmen Roebuck on a six-yard TD strike to put the Huskies up 17-3. The Husky defense made it’s third big play of the game. On the ensuing drive, Washington’s CB Rahshawn Clark intercepted Madsen again. The Huskies capitalized on the turnover when Williams hit WR Raiden Vines-Bright for his first career touchdown. The Huskies went into halftime with a 24-3 lead.

Washington continues to roll in the third quarter

The Huskies went right down the field on their first drive of the second half. Williams capped a seven-play, 55-yard drive with another TD pass. This time, he found TE Quentin Moore on another play-action pass for the 32-yard score. When the Broncos came out on offense for their first second-half drive, Max Cutforth took over at quarterback over Madsen, who suffered a lower leg injury. Washington’s defense continued to stymie the Broncos’ offense, forcing two more punts and a fourth-down stop in the red zone. The Dawgs’ dominant third quarter on defense helped them maintain a 31-3 lead heading into the fourth.

DEEFENSES STRONG PLAY KEY TO WIN

Washington’s defense ended three straight Boise State drives with interceptions to begin the fourth quarter. CB Leroy Bryant had two, and DT Deshawn Lynch had one to set up another Husky touchdown. Washington’s defense was the story of the game, as Boise State was completely outmatched.

The Huskies played their best defensive game of the season, forcing five interceptions and shutting down the Broncos’ offense. Washington did not surrender a touchdown until the end of the fourth quarter. Xe’ree Alexander led the way for the Huskies’ defense with seven tackles and an interception. Washington rolled to a 38-10 blowout victory over Boise State to claim the LA Bowl.

Key Stats from the Huskies’ LA Bowl win

Washington won the turnover battle (5-1) and outscored Boise State in points off turnovers 14-0. The Huskies also ran the ball effectively, putting up 128 yards on the ground. RB Jonah Coleman led the way with 86 rushing yards on 12 carries and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter of his final game as a Husky. Washington’s ground attack opened up the play-action pass, as Demond Williams finished with 214 yards passing and four touchdowns through the air. The Huskies’ run defense was superb once again, holding the Broncos to 58 rushing yards. Washington saved its best game for last to end the season on a high note, finishing with nine wins in year two under Jedd Fisch.
