The Washington Huskies played their first game at the Acrisure Holiday Classic on Thursday against the Nevada Wolf Pack. The Huskies’ depth was tested, with forwards Bryson Tucker and Hannes Steinbach both watching from the sidelines due to ankle injuries. Washington looked to its backcourt to carry the load. Washington’s defense leads the way in the first half
The Huskies did an impressive job of limiting the Wolf Pack’s leading scorers, Corey Camper and Tayshawn Comer, early in the contest. Camper and Comer shot a combined 2/8 from the field and had six points. Washington held Nevada to just 32% from the field, as the Wolf Pack scored just 12 points in the paint. The Huskies won the rebound battle despite the absence of two of their big men. Washington out-rebounded Nevada 26-18 in the first half. Lathan Sommerville led the team in rebounds with six.
Washington takes a lead into halftime despite shooting poorly from the field
The Huskies shot just 33% from the field in the first half. They did most of their scoring from inside the key and at the free-throw line. Washington had 18 points in the paint and made 10/15 free throws. Zoom Diallo led the way for the Huskies on offense, scoring 13 points, shooting 4/5 from the field and 4/5 at the foul line. Wesley Yates also had eight points, despite going 1/5 from the field, but did make 5/6 from the charity stripe.
Huskies offense gets hot in the second half
Washington closed out the game with a strong shooting performance. The Huskies made 13/25 (shooting 52%) from the field after going just 11/30 (shooting 33%) in the first half. Wesley Yates paced the Huskies with 17 points and made three shots from beyond the arc. Franck Kepnang and Quimari Peterson also chipped in 11 points each. Riding hot second-half shooting, the Dawgs cruised to an 83-66 victory.

The Huskies shot 8/14 (57%) from three-point range for the game. Wesley Yates led the team with four made threes, Quimari Peterson hit three, and Zoom Diallo had one. Washington out-rebounded its opponent for the sixth consecutive game, 44-30. The Huskies shot more free throws than Nevada at the foul line, going 27/36 from the line, while Nevada went 16/23. Franck Kepnang was a perfect 6/6 from the field, scored 15 points, and had a team-high four blocks. Wesley Yates led the team in scoring with 25 points for the game. Washington meets Colorado in the finals on Friday to close out the Acrisure Holiday Classic.
