Washington wins Apple Cup of hoops, beating WSU 81-69

The University of Washington Men’s Basketball was looking for a bounce-back game on the road against Washington State, following a loss to Baylor. To beat the Cougars, the Huskies needed to be efficient from three-point range and play hard-nosed defense. The Dawgs shot just 3 of 20 from beyond the arc and left too many points on the court on Sunday. Head Coach Danny Sprinkle emphasized closing out on shooters and rebounding earlier in the week. On Friday, the Huskies made their head coach proud with a dominant performance against the Cougars in the Apple Cup of hoops.

Washington controls the first half

The Dawgs shook off their shooting woes at Baylor and exploded in the first half with 44 points. Wesley Yates led the way with 15 points and made 3 of 6 three-pointers. Hannes Steinbach nearly posted a double-double, scoring 10 points and collecting nine rebounds. The Huskies shot 53% from the field and made 6 of 14 three-pointers (42.9%). They also held the Cougars to 33.3% from the field. Washington State made 4 of 19 shots from the three-point range (21.1%). The Dawgs led Washington State 44-30 at halftime.

Washington holds off Cougars’ late rally

The Huskies’ hot shooting continued early on in the second half, as they jumped out to a 63-41 lead. Zoom Diallo and Wesley Yates led the way as they each scored in double figures. Washington cooled off in the second half, and the Courgas fought their way back into the game. Washington State went on a 15-2 run to cut the Huskies’ lead to single digits, 65-56. The Dawgs held off a late rally by the Cougars, making clutch shots and hitting free throws down the stretch for the 81-69 victory.

The Dawgs have done a fantastic job of boxing out to start the season, and against the Cougars, they out-rebounded them 36 to 33. They have out-rebounded their opponents in all four games so far this year. Washington was able to draw fouls and made 18/23 free throw attempts. The Huskies shot and made eight more free throws than they did against Baylor. The Dawgs also improved their shooting from three-point range, hitting 9 of 26 three-point shots for a (34.6%).

Washington had several big contributors who led them to victory

Despite playing with a first-half ankle injury, Hannes Steinbach recorded his third double-double in a row. He scored 14 points and had a team-high 13 rebounds in the game. Three other Washington players finished in double figures in scoring: Wesley Yates led the way with 26 points, Zoom Diallo had 20 points, and Quimari Peterson had 10 points. The Huskies continue to show that any of their players can step up and help the team win on any given night. Washington’s next game is on Tuesday against Southern at Alaska Airlines Arena.
