In addition to practice, Thursdays are designated days for the Seahawks’ two coordinators to speak to the media. Here are quotes from offensive coordinator Kint Kubiak and defensive coordinator Aden Durde.
(On the tape says where the team is at) “It says we’re improving week by week. We try and be physical as much as we possibly can. I think there’s another place we can go. There’s a higher standard that the guys want to play at, and I think they try and push themselves there, but it also shows some really good stuff. You can’t look at something and just always say ‘Where can we overcoach something?’ You also have to praise people, and some people are doing some really good things.”
(On if there will be any challenges of reintegrating Nick Emmanwori into the defense) “No, he’s always in the meetings. Since he came back last Monday, he’s been doing all the walkthroughs and getting himself right. I think he’ll be ready for the game plan that’s for him and get ready to go.”
(On Riq Woolen’s play on the ball)
“He plays a position, I think you asked me, there’s a lot of the game on Riq (Woolen) you don’t see. If the ball doesn’t go to his side, you don’t see it. And if you watch the tape, there’s some good stuff and then at times there’s some stuff where he gets attacked. I think when you get in these situations as you go through, you’ve got to focus on your technique. You’ve got to focus on the process. And I feel like Riq’s doing that this week. If you come out, work your technique and win at the line of scrimmage, it just improves you week by week. I don’t think you have to overthink these things. I think you have to, like you asked me about DK (Derion Kendrick), you have to compete. The vision of what we’re creating here is a group of people that are competing at the highest level and the best version of themselves.”
(On limiting Baker Mayfield’s ability to “run like a running back”)
“It’s hard. This guy is a really good player. Sometimes you don’t always get to see the crossover tape of everyone in the NFL, and when you really watch this guy, he’s been at an extremely high level. He’s got a real unreal sense for the pocket, where the space is in the pocket and how to manipulate people in small spaces. It’s hard. You can see that he wins the game by doing that. He’s won multiple games by keeping the play alive when it should be dead. You’ve got to take your hat off to him. He is a real one.”
(On having Derion Kendrick play nickel and Devon Witherspoon play on the outside)
“When you get into situations like this, and I feel like it’s everywhere in the defense. I know you’re talking about Spoon (Devon Witherspoon), but Spoon’s a good outside player too. So DK’s (Derion Kendrick) playing well inside. I keep saying it every week to you guys, I know I sound like a stuck record, but if you grow competition and people understand it and they play to the best of their ability, they’re going to maximize their snaps on the field. And I feel like there’s certain people in our defense that are doing that right now.”
OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR KLINT KUBIAK
(On the challenge that Tampa Bay’s defense presents)
“They’re so well-coached. They’re disciplined, they play really hard, they take the ball away. Very similar to our defense how physical that Tampa is. Playing against Coach (Todd) Bowles for many years, his guys are in the right spots, and they’re coming with a bad attitude. We have a ton of respect for them and putting all of our time this week into getting ready for them.”
(On having rushing plays that went for zero or negative yards in the first four games)
“Number one is coaching better. Number two is getting our guys ready to go, get better targeted, but it all starts with me and just being better organized for the players so that we can give them a successful plan.”
(On Vita Vea)
“He’s a premier defensive lineman in this league. Obviously, he’s a big man, but he plays really hard, and the guys around him are excellent, it’s a really good front. We have a ton of respect for them.” (On Sam Darnold’s decision making) “I think just his experience; he’s got a lot of games in this league piled up. There are very few things he hasn’t seen. Throughout the week in meetings, he’s always bringing up things that, ‘Hey, what happens if they do this? What’s my check here? What play can I do get to?’ He’s so forward-thinking. He’s using his past experience to his advantage
(On the connection among the coaches)
“That’s another advantage we have with coach Mike (Macdonald). The way that, number one, he’s built the staff and the camaraderie that he fosters, that starts in the offseason. He’s a brilliant X’s and O’s coach. However, I think he’s even better at bringing our staff together. Everyone loves everybody when you’re winning, right? Everything’s rainbows and cupcakes when you’re winning. It’s when adversity hits, and it’s going to hit for all of us, how does your staff come together when that happens?”
