UW Mock Game Recap

The Washington Huskies held their mock game just two weeks before the teams season opener. Head coach Jedd Fisch knows there is more to work on, but he likes where his team is at. Saturday night’s game served as an opportunity for players to get accustomed to playing in front of a crowd. There were approximately 1,000 fans in attendance for the Mock Game. The first-, second-, and third-string players each had opportunities to play tonight. Here is a look at what stood out, with the position battles and competition taking place during the Mock Game.

UW freshman WR Raiden Vines-Bright shines again

After a strong showing at the Spring Game, Raiden Vines-Bright continues to show he can play in front of a crowd. He had three nice catches in Saturday’s Mock Game, including a 20-yard reception from Demond Williams. Vines-Bright made the most of his opportunity to play with the ones on Saturday while Omari Evans and Kevin Green played with the twos. Fisch said of his freshman receiver, “Raiden Vines-Bright had a real nice night tonight.” Vines-Bright continued to help his case for the slot receiver position. He continues to compete with upperclassmen Omari Evans and Kevin Green for the spot. Fisch said he and his staff are still evaluating what each receiver can do in the slot and that competition is still ongoing.

More WRs who stood out for the Huskies tonight

Freshman WR Dezmen Roebuck had a couple of nice catches as well, playing with a mix of the ones and twos. Roebuck also made a big 24-yard catch while playing with the twos. Sophomore WR Audric Harris also had a touchdown catch while playing with the ones. TE Decker Degraaf made several catches tonight. Degraaf was also effective in the red zone, where he caught a touchdown pass from Demond Williams.

Competition is still ongoing for starting LG

Redshirt freshman Paki Finau and true freshman John Mills continue to battle for the starting LG position. Fisch believes the competition could see both players rotating.

“John Mills started tonight, first drive out there and did a pretty good job from what it looked like on the sideline, I’ll have to look at the film, but those two guys continue to battle it out. Should probably have both playing at some point, I would expect alternating in some regard, but really good job by Mills stepping up and Paki keeps getting better.”

There is still an ongoing competition for starting LG between Paki Finau and John Mills. Paki Finau played in the first three games last year and the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, and is still showing what he can do. John Mills continues to make an impression on the coaching staff during fall camp, with another good day today. With the season starting in less than two weeks, the starting LG position is still up for grabs.
