Quick take aways from Seahawks 33-16 win over Chiefs

The Seahawks rushed for 268 yards on their way to a 33-16 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Sam Darnold led the offensive starters on a game-opening 10-play 81-yard drive that ended with a Zach Charbonnet 15-yard touchdown run.  Wide out Jake Bobo caught two touchdown passes and had a punt return.  Despite the interior starters sitting the game out, the Seahawks’ defense line was able to apply pressure and hold the Chiefs to just one touchdown.

THE OFFENSIVE LINE IS READY FOR PRIME TIME

The Seahawks showed their commitment to the run with the team’s first drive of the game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

With Jalen Sundel, a center, Anthony Bradford Gray Zable at the guards, Abe Lucas, and Josh Jones at the tackles, the Seahawks ran the ball with efficiency and physicality. Add Robbie Outzs at fullback, the unit led by Sam Darnold and Zach Cahrbonnet took the opening drive 81 yards and scored on a 10-play drive that lasted 5:29. Charbonnet’s 15-yard dash into the endzone was the cherry on top of an impressive drive.     The drive was a perfect blend of run and pass. Six runs and four pass plays. Cooper Kupp, Jaxson Smith-Njigba and  A.J. Barner were the other starters. The starters finished the night on 19 plays, 166 yards with an average of 8.7 yards per play.

“ We’re just plugging away. Our offensive line coaches are doing a heck of a job. John Benton, Rico (Rick Dennison), JO (Justin Outten), Quinshon (Odom). It’s really clear what we’re asking them to do. They’re determined and playing really hard and practicing really hard. A lot of great stuff, “ said  Mike Macdonald.”

A lot of great stuff. But I just told the team, hey, this is what we’re capable of to a certain extent. These are things that you get a feel for what we can do. There is a lot of stuff we can improve on and it’s also the second week of preseason. Like it’s great, but it’s a building block for us moving into the season, and we want to be playing our best football throughout the season but keep getting better all the way from here on out.

SAM DARNOLD IS THE LEADER

Sam Darnold showed his ability to lead a balanced offense. He was sharp with his reads and his passes were on the money. Despite the small sample size,  Darnold played the opening series and was a perfect  4 for 4.  Darnold’s four completed passes were to A.J. Barner,  Jaxson Smith-Njigba,  Robbie Outzs, and Elija Arroyo.

THE SEAHAWKS  HAVE A STABLE OF RUNNING

With Ken Walker on the sidelines, several running backs seized the moment to impress the coaches.  No surprise that Zach  Charbonnet started the game in place of  Walker and had five carries for 45 yards and the 15-yard touchdown run.   George  Holani’s five carries for 49 yards put him in the driver’s seat for the third running back position.  Rookie  Damian Martinez’s eleven carries for 50 yards and a touchdown reminded coaches of his skill set.

“ The way we were able to run the football like we talked about, mixing in keepers and play-action and even some dropback there on second down early in the drive, it was our style of football. It’s the style we wanted to create in OTAs and even training camp, “ said  Sam Darnold about the teams  talented backfield. “ We started to find our identity that way. Can kind of see to come to life. Like you just mentioned it’s August, so there is still a long ways to go in terms of where we want to be as an offense. It was really good to get out there and just take the field as a unit the way we wanted to.”

SOME SPECIAL TEAMS TO CLEAN UP

The lone major blemish on the team’s win was an 88 punt return by Chiefs punt returner Skyy Moore in the fourth quarter. In the first half, the Chiefs were 3-4 on third down. Overall, the Seahawks played well enough to win . All in all, it was a preseason, meaning some miscommunication is bound to happen and be turned into learning opportunities.
