Notes and Quotes from Seahawks  Preseason Opener with the Las Vegas Raiders

The Seahawks started their preseason with an entertaining 23-23 tie against the Las Vegas Raiders. It was probably for the best that the game ended in a stalemate. The game marked the return of former head coach Pete Carroll, quarterback Geno Smith, and Safety Jamal Adams. For the 12’s  the game   was an opportunity to say thank you to Carroll and get a first-hand look at the Seahawks heralded rookie class, along with  the team first and second-year players

CONVINCING RUN  GAME

 New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s wide zone run game amassed 170 yards  to give Seahawks fans hope the team will  be able to run the ball with some consistency.   Kubiak’s offense  led by  Drew Lock and Jalen Milroe had  198  passing yards .  After doing some quick math the Seahawks had 368 offensive yards. George Holani led the rushing attack with seven carries for 61 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver. Tory Horton led all receivers with three  eceptions for 31 yards and one touchdown.  Quarterback. Jalen Milroe was 6 of 10 for 61 yards and rushed for 38  yards on three carries. Milroe had one sack.   Damien Martinez demonstrated his versatility with two kickoff returns for 25 yards and 15 rushing yards on two carries.

OFFENSIVE LINE

More importantly for Macdonald was the seamless play of rookie guard Grey Zabel. He started at left guard alongside Josh Jones and showed he was ready for the NFL. Jalen   Sander began to a center with Anthony Bradford and right guard with  Abe Lucas at left tackle.     Elijah Arroyo stared at the tight end with Tory Horton at receiver.  Eric Schubert and  Jake Bobo were the other two starters.

MIKE MACDONALD: Good to see everybody. Great to be back at Lumen (Field). Thought the 12s were awesome for a preseason game. Place was rocking. Forced them to be on silent cadence. Told the team, look, you never want to tie a football game. Kind of stinks. But a lot of great stuff on both sides of the ball. Special teams as well. You know, guys got our attention. We can go through all the guys, but we’re going to watch the tape and evaluate everybody. I thought the effort was tremendous. Our vets, especially the guys that didn’t play were awesome support. The two penalties were the cost of doing business. We’ll be better moving forward. Great to see the enthusiasm. Obviously we want to be able to close games out in the fourth quarter, so both sides this will be something to look at. A lot of stuff we’re going to learn from, too, as a coaching staff in how we operate and players as well. So solid start. Can’t wait to watch the tape. Again, I keep saying this every week, but it’s a big week coming up ahead of us here. Looking forward to the next game.

Q. What did you like about your first offensive line, Mike?

MIKE MACDONALD: Well, just you felt the line of scrimmage, you felt the physicality. They gave us a couple pressures there early where we weren’t necessarily expecting, so being able to identify the front, get everything targeted the right way, and sustaining blocks, I thought that was really good. Thought we kept the quarterback clean for the most part, especially in the first half. A lot of good stuff.

Q. I know, it’s really early in the process, but what did you like about Klint’s offense, especially in the first half? More of those guys in there, and like 7 for 10 on third down and ran the ball a little bit.

MIKE MACDONALD: I thought situationally we did a great job. I feel like we’re on a pretty good cadence communication-wise. It’s great to hear the communication over the headset. Everybody on the staff, everybody is contributing. Play calls in fast. Just all the things we saw in practice were there, and there is some stuff we’re going to go back and recalibrate and learn from and improve on. But solid first start. He’s always chasing the things, which is what you appreciate about him. But I thought we ran the ball well. Not sure on the stats, but it felt like we were moving it. Third down completions were good. Got some explosive plays and had a good two-minute opportunity there at the end to go win the game. Would’ve been great to go down and close it out.

Q. George Holani had a great preseason last year as a rookie. How have you seen him take his game to the next level? He had 81 yards on just eight touches today.

MIKE MACDONALD: I feel like we don’t talk about George enough, but he’s just the guy that does everything right all the time. It’s great to see him have success because of how hard he works. You saw the runs, but the kickoff tackle was a big play for us. I think he’s a pretty well-rounded player.

Q. Coach, I know it was a fourth and 20 situation at the end of the game. Is there a reason you decided to punt for it, just a long shot to try and convert?

MIKE MACDONALD: That wasn’t really part of the conversation. If we don’t convert there we’re pretty much handing them the game.

Q. What did you think of Jalen MIlroe? His first two drives the holding penalty, so he was kind of behind the sticks I guess on those. What did you think?

MIKE MACDONALD: I thought Jalen played well. I thought he made good decisions. Operation-wise there are some things we want to be a little cleaner on. Throwing the ball accurately, throwing it on time, and then when it wasn’t there, extending plays with his legs I thought was really cool. Made some good decisions in the quarterback-driven game with how they’re playing their edges. Again, we haven’t game-planned these guys, but they’re a mesh charge of the quarterback, so not getting greedy and handing the ball off and having effective runs, I thought that was good stuff for not really having prepped them for them.

Q. Tory Horton has been having a lot of good practices in a row. Just to see him take it to the game and have a good game.

MIKE MACDONALD: Yeah, it was great. Then to see him catch the punt was awesome, I’m not sure how long that return was, but that helped us there. Then obviously the touchdown and you just felt him out there in those situations, which was a continuation of what we’re seeing in practice. Great to see it in a game setting.

Q. Talked about cost of doing business for the two penalties. What did you make of the defense coming off the sidelines?

MIKE MACDONALD: These guys are ready to play a game. They’ve seen the work that our non-starters have put in, and to see those guys come up and attack the ball the way they did was really cool. Wanted to make a little bit more of a return in both situations. We worked plus-one a lot, so there is some meat left on the bone in that situation. But we do have to show the guys, those penalties did affect us in the game. Changed field position. We really can’t afford to be doing that moving forward. Having the enthusiasm and guys fired up for guys making plays was pretty cool.

Q. Speaking of Tory, seeing his punt return kind of the way he was able to move around some guys there and that, what is it about his skillset that you kind of like in that role in addition to what you saw in him receiving? Obviously you had the spin down at the end the goal line as well.

MIKE MACDONALD: Well, the run after catch is a similar situation and punt return. He’s worked really hard — he’s catching a lot of punts and he’s worked really hard at it. It’s just his MO. Just works really hard. Does the right things. Makes great decisions. Good things happen when the process is right.

Q. How do you go about evaluating a preseason game? Do you evaluate the team or is it a bunch of individual evaluations for each player?

MIKE MACDONALD: It’s both. I think it’s both. As a coaching staff there is kind of just piece it in a bunch of different things. How we start the game. You know, we’re going to go back and look at our warmup and see how that went. We’re going to go evaluate our run defense. We are going to evaluate our third down defense on both sides of the ball. Field goal protection. Extra point block. So you’re kind of looking at everything evaluating it, looking at it situationally, and then as a whole how we start games and how we close games is going to be really important. Ultimately this is a personnel evaluation, so you’re going to be watching all the guys that played and evaluating them as well.

Q. How do you think Nick Emmanwori played?

MIKE MACDONALD: Good. We want him to get his feet wet, go affect the game as best he could. From when he was in there we felt him. We sent him on a couple pressures and did a good job. Did a good job. I think it was a couple series and then we felt like that was good.

Q. On Jamie Sheriff.

MIKE MACDONALD: Just working through something. He’ll be back soon.

Q. On Tuesday you highlighted Tyreke Smith as a player you were looking forward to watching him rush the passer.

MIKE MACDONALD: Yeah.

Q. Seemed like he came through in some crucial moments in this game.

MIKE MACDONALD: Yeah, same thing with Tyreke. Great to feel him in the run game, too. Thought he played physical. Can’t think of all the plays right now frankly, but looking forward to watching the tape and I know he’s playing hard. I felt him out there.

Q. What do you think of Brandon Pili?

MIKE MACDONALD: Yeah, just another great story of a guy that’s really determined over the offseason to have a great offseason. Really commit to the process both with his body and how he practices and getting into football shape so he can go have performances like this. So we’re halfway through camp here. Got a couple more weeks that will be really important for him. Really excited for him. Happy for him. Just happy for him to have success because you see how much work he’s put into it.

Q. What do you think of Robbie Ouzts reps at fullback there? Obvious had the one block on Holani’s touchdown. That was obvious to see. Anything else stand out?

MIKE MACDONALD: I was talking about how he started the game. They brought a Sam strong safety, something that we haven’t really repped much with that run scheme. But to be able to follow those rules, and ended up blocking Maxx (Crosby) on that play, which was pretty cool. So definitely felt him. Just like, hey, what is that, your second play as an NFL player and you just go execute at a high level and pop an explosive run? That was pretty cool.

Q. You mentioned a couple players making good decisions. What does that say about what you’re doing during the week and how players are embracing that and executing in the game?

MIKE MACDONALD: Well, you know, we like to take pride in how we practice, and as a coach you are really trying to make practice harder than games by stretching guys, putting them in different situations, making them think on the fly. Now, there are things that I’m thinking about that happened in the game that I think we can realize in real time a little bit faster, and so there are some things we’re going to want to simulate moving forward so we improve in those situations. But, I think you go out there and if the game feels slower for you that means they’re practicing the right way. I think our guys do that.

Q. Mike, Tory Horton as your punt returner, why do you like him in that role?

MIKE MACDONALD: Well, he’s competing to be our punt returner right now. You know, his run after the catch is great. We talked about this earlier. But run after the catch is good. Sure hands. Works hard at it. Makes great decisions.

Q. Talk about the communication with Klint Kubiak. He’s working from down on the sidelines. How does that change the dynamic with him?

MIKE MACDONALD: I think that’s where he’s leaning right now. I don’t really have a preference. It’s whatever he prefers. So we’ll kind of re-huddle here in the next few days and see if it he wants to try to give it a go upstairs or see what that feels like. It’s still kind of a work in progress. I think just as another playcaller, likes being on the field. You get a good feel for the game and personnel substitutions and situations, and the communication piece for guys on and off the field is great. Sometimes it’s tough. Today AD (Aden Durde) was calling it, and I was trying to talk to him to talk to the linebackers. So you want to be direct to the players as much as you can.

Q. You had Marshawn Lynch come to the sideline before. Did you see him today with the camera?

MIKE MACDONALD: Yeah, we did. I was trying to get him to talk to the guys in the locker room at halftime. He dipped off. Great to see him.

Q. Was there anything you didn’t expect or learned tonight that you didn’t know tonight because of a game situation?

MIKE MACDONALD: I don’t think so. I mean, we’ll go back and evaluate tomorrow. But, yeah, it’s a lot of both. It’s a lot of the great stuff that you’re thinking about, you’re fired up. Especially guys that haven’t had that opportunity yet to go show it and put great energy and physicality out there; I thought that was really cool. And then there were some things where you realize that we’re not there yet, so let’s go to work on it. Let’s go attack it. We have time but we don’t have time. There is urgency there.

Q. Do you have any update on Tyrice Knight?

MIKE MACDONALD: I don’t have an update on him right now. We are going to get more information tomorrow.

Q. What do you think of the virtual measurement?

MIKE MACDONALD: I think they said they were going to give it a go to try it out. I don’t think they change the spot on that one, did they?

Q. No. Virtual measurements in general.

MIKE MACDONALD: Oh, what about it?

Q. Yeah.

MIKE MACDONALD: I love it. It’s 2025, let’s get it right, you know.

QB DREW LOCK

Q. Overall assessment of your game today, kind of just the first half?

DREW LOCK: It was great to be back out there, for one. I thought the guys around me played their butts off. It was fun getting into a game with Kubes (Klint Kubiak) and training camp practice you get a couple non-scripted periods, so it was fun to kind of get in the flow, get in a rhythm. We did a great job in the first drive. Got to take care of the ball. Shoot, felt like we handled our business out there. Drove down, got points. I think it was, what was it, 16 or 17 in the first half. Guys were making plays. We were able to run the ball, which is huge. We just played pretty well in the first half. Guys were making the plays when the opportunities came to them, and that’s what you preach to everybody in the preseason. The guys that haven’t played or getting their first couple games, you’re going to get opportunities. This is what you do with them when they come your way, and I thought guys were making the best of them.

Q. How do you feel about that the protection that you had in front of you?

DREW LOCK: Yeah.

Q. Guys out there playing in their first game, but seemed like those guys are really controlling the line of scrimmage.

DREW LOCK: They did a fantastic job. You can get a tell on how protection is when you see the run game happen. Busting out big runs and return, when I got to drop back and pass I had a pretty clean pocket. Makes it easy for me. I appreciate those guys up front. It was cool to be back out there with Abe (Lucas) and Grey (Zabel). Been a couple years since I’ve been with Abe. It was fun to be back out there with familiar faces and guys you once played with. The guys up front did a great job.

Q. Coach mentioned a play early on where they brought down a look you hadn’t repped a ton yet and you guys were able to handle that. I think it was on a run play. To see that group work out of a situation like that in the preseason, get that block, might have been the one to get Crosby on that play, too, what do you think of the work of that group as they mix and match and had pieces come together for it?

DREW LOCK: Yeah, being able to be a group that doesn’t necessarily always go together, right, you’re throwing different tackles and guards and centers in. You go out and like you said Maxx (Crosby) was out there. (Jeremy) Chinn was out there. They got some good players out there in the first couple drives. For us to be able to run the ball, communicate on different fronts, different looks, you’re going off last year’s preseason games and the year before’s preseason games, and getting a couple different looks up front for them to be able to communicate and keep the run game alive. That’s really impressive.

Q. You mentioned the run game. Lining up under center, I-formation with the fullback behind you is maybe not something we see a ton in the NFL. What do you like about that one?

DREW LOCK: Oh, man, in a way, I mean you get under center and you can pound the run like we did, and in return get some play-action, in return under center drop back. That’s how it used to be played quite often, and us being able to do that, it just has to be tough for defenses. It’s not always run. We can pass out of it. It’s not always play-action. We can drop back. It’s not always pass. We are going to run. It’s good complementary football and it definitely helps us.

Q. What do you make out of Tory Horton’s night? Seems like he has a little something to his game, and seeing it play out like it did, what is it about his skillset that leaves an impression with you?

DREW LOCK: You hate to say it this early, but what he went out and did tonight was everything I expected of him to go out and do based on how he’s been performing in training camp. Just a really, really solid player. Runs the right routes. Goes up and get contested catches. And when ball gets in his hand, he makes the plays. igh praise for a rookie. He still a long way to go. He’s on the right track and he works hard. If he keeps working hard and keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s going to be a really good football player.

Q. I know Pete Carroll and Geno Smith are guys that have meant a lot to you in your career.

DREW LOCK: Yeah.

Q. What was it like getting to see both of them before the game?

DREW LOCK: It was really cool, really cool. I got to spend some more time this offseason with Geno throwing in Miami with him, so it felt like it hadn’t been too long since I saw him. Seeing Pete was really cool. Like I’ve mentioned before, he’s meant a lot to me. Building the confidence back after being traded, I really appreciate him. He’s definitely a major part of my football journey.

Q. What did you think of Jalen Milroe?

DREW LOCK: He’s fast. He’s really fast. Really fast. You know, definitely saw it tonight. Made great decisions with the ball in his hand as far as passing goes. I mentioned this to him; getting into those fourth quarter preseason games it’s all about making the right decisions, right footwork, right reads. From the sideline I felt like he did that tonight. He did a great job. I was proud of him.

QB JALEN MILROE

(On his first NFL game) “​Number one, what a dream come true. To play my first NFL game in Lumen Field. I think the best thing for all of us is to regroup, but also build on this game. I think that’s so important. As you go on any journey, you have to start somewhere. With that, you’re able to look upon what we did well, what we didn’t, and just try to build upon that, get one percent better as we have this opportunity. For me, it was just awesome to be in Lumen Field. That was my first time here in the stadium. So now the biggest thing is to keep on building and see every opportunity for us to get better.”

(On if he’s surprised by designed runs in the game) “No, I’m not really surprised by that. That’s definitely a weapon that will be utilized now or even in the future against defenses. You know how much of a threat it is against defenses when you’re able to throw and run. I know no matter what game plan it is, utilizing the passing game and the running game is going to be beneficial for us.”

(On the fourth down play) “Yeah, I think for us as players it’s all about execution. We failed to execute on that play. No matter what play call is asked of us, it’s all about execution. We’ll have an opportunity to regroup and (I’ll) watch the tape and see what exactly I could have done on my part. But of course, incompletion, you’re going to look at how we can be better on that play. The best thing for me as a quarterback is the coach trusting me on fourth down to make a play. I just give thanks to Coach (Klint) Kubiak, Coach (Mike) Macdonald, because they kept our offense on the field and allowed us to have an opportunity to advance the downs. That’s part of playing football. You’re going to have success, you’re going to have failure. So it’s all about regrouping and understanding what we need to do so that we can execute when we have those opportunities.”

WR TORY HORTON

(On his first day) “It was great. A lot of people know that I had the injury last season, so it’s kind of been a while since I’ve been on the football field. Finally getting back on the football field and doing what I love felt great.”

(On the touchdown) “It was something that, when I first did it, I kind of messed up, and I talked to myself of dialing in on that specific play and concept. Drew (Lock) and I execute it on a high level. It was a great ball and I let the rest take over. Drew put that ball on the money, so it was good. At the end of the day in the receiver room we all kind of just harp on, you know, being in zone hungry. Thats from Coop. That’s from Jax, Valdes, all those older guys, even Coach Fris. We want to find that end zone and that’s something that we practice on. Getting vertical and making that next guy miss, also protecting the ball. I had a vision, saw my cue, and just made sure I made that next guy miss again vertical. That’s something we practiced on every day.”

(On his punt return) “That’s something that I kind of, you know, we practice on that practice. That’s something that kind of just kicks in and take over once you have the live bullets flying and, I was a little frustrated, I didn’t get out of that last tackle. I felt like I saw a lot of green grass and we’ll go back to the film and make sure we have some corrections on that.”

RB GEORGE HOLANI

(On whether he knew he had scored on his touchdown, prior to the replay) “Oh yeah, I had a feeling I was in for sure. That play, it was crazy just going back and looking at it. Everybody was in the box, and I’m like, dang, I’m looking outside, I might pre-determine this, and I just bounced it. It was just clear from there.” 

(On the blocking up front) “Shout out to the bigs, man. None of this is possible without them getting after those guys every play. They showed all effort, all night, and I’m excited for those guys and what’s to come from them.”

(On having Ashton [Jeanty] on the other side) “Oh yeah, that’s my guy, for sure. I saw him after the game and I was trying to get his jersey, but apparently their EQ guys said he couldn’t give it.” 

(On the difference between this offensive scheme and last year’s) “It’s a lot different, just sitting in meetings and going through the run-game install everyday, with the O-line and the receivers, everybody’s in one room. We really prioritize the run game.”

(On what is specifically different for him) “Nothing changed for our aiming points or our tracks, but it’s the details of what we see up front, what the defense lines up in and how they shift and adjust as the game goes on. Being able to make the right calls and those guys up there are getting after it.” 

(On getting 75 yards rushing in the first half) “I didn’t know what to expect coming out. Not knowing how many reps I’m getting, what’s the snap count. Just going out there and executing one play at a time, just trying to make one play come to life.”

(On having a fullback in front of him) “Shout out to [Robbie] Ouzts, man. He’s a big, physical fullback. He does everything right in practice, from run blocking to pass pro, whatever it is. We can depend on that guy to go out there and get the job done.” 

(On his pride in being a player who can do a lot of things, including special teams) “I take priority in special teams, especially where I am in the depth. We have a hell of a running back group. Just being able to go out there and impact on special teams, for sure.”

(On the opportunity he has now, with how the injuries have gone in camp so far) “I would say just staying prepared, for me. Not knowing what’s ahead for me, but just being able to stay prepared, be a pro in how I take care of business on and off the field.”

CB NEHEMIAH PRITCHETT

(On his first NFL interception) “It’s a blessing – a dream come true. I’ve been praying for moments like this my whole life, so to get my first interception is a blessing.”

(On what he saw on his interception) “It’s crazy because we saw the same play at practice all the time. I’ve seen the play a thousand times and I picked one at practice the exact same way. It’s crazy how that happened the same way.”

(On how he feels he’s improved this preseason) “This is my second year of defense, so a lot has slowed down for me this year. Last year, as a rookie, everything’s moving fast. This year it slowed down a bit. Let me play a little faster.”

WR JAKE BOBO

(On his early impressions of the new offense) “You shoved the rock and then a couple play action [plays] mixed in there, that’s a receivers dream. You have the safeties bite on the run and just running by them. It’s a lot of fun. Honestly, it’s just dipping the toe in the water. There’s a lot more where that came from and I’m excited to see how he develops the scheme.”

(On if they could feel the presence of a fullback in the offense) “Yeah, but I’ll be honest, we’ve felt it for the past couple of weeks. [Robbie Ouzts] puts his hat on people. It was cool to finally see it live.”

(On how having a fullback can help the offense dictate the terms on offense) “Well we’re going to tell you when we’re going to run it down your throat and then we’re going to run it down your throat. That’s kind of the attitude of our offense and our team right now. And it was cool to kind of take some of that out on somebody in a different colored jersey.”

(On what it was like to see Pete Carroll) “I love that guy. Pete and then I had Chip [Kelly], their offensive coordinator, was my head coach in college. Just to see Pete and his staff, that was a lot of fun.”

DE MIKE MORRIS

(On his performance in the game) “I feel like this year, I’m a lot more comfortable, a lot more calm and collected. I felt like last year, I was just trying to fit in when I got in, like special teams. It was a period of stagnation where I just had to kind of do what I do, but without any progress. This year, I talked with the coaches, they had a great plan for me and now I feel free and like I can play again.”

(On the game ending in a tie) “You never want to end in a tie, but I feel like a lot of us showed great things and we showed great poise. And game on the line, a blocked field goal, what more can you ask for?”

(On going up against Geno Smith and the Raiders starters) “We set the standard. I feel like it doesn’t really make an impact if [our starters] don’t play, we just wanted to make a mark and let them understand that they’re not running the ball, they’re not getting anything. And we showed it.”

TE ELIJAH ARROYO

(On how he felt in his first NFL game) “I felt great. First NFL game, it was great to be able to take in that moment. It felt surreal. Once I got there I had confidence. I’m prepared and I belong here.”

(On how he feels the rookies performed as a whole) “The rookies had a good day overall. We have a lot to improve on. But that’s why we’re here. We want to get better and the guys in our rookie class do a good job with that.”

(On what he liked about how he played today and what he wants to improve) “No drops today. That’s always a good day. I could improve on being consistent in the run game. There’s certain defensive moves I want to learn how to counter.”

NT BRANDON PILI

(On how it felt to get two big plays under his belt in the first half) “It felt good. You go through training camp and you practice hours, hours and hours of the same thing and you pray that you can be able to get it done on the big stage when it counts. I’m blessed enough to be able to do that.”

(On how it feels to have coach Mike Macdonald rooting for him) “It feels good. It comes from the whole coaching staff as a whole. They’ve been working with me. They enjoy that I’ve been progressing and doing well in training camp. I’m going to keep it going.”

(On what he did this offseason to get into shape) “This off season, they had a good offseason program. We ran and lifted every day. I really locked in on the details, what I was putting in my body and my habits. I had to change a few habits stop eating some stuff here and there, but it’s all worth it.”

CB JOSH JOBE

(On what going against a starting offense does for the team) “It does a lot. At the end of the day, it’s all about competing. See what we have and see what we are going up against. It was great going against the (Raiders) first team.”

(On the team celebrating his interception) “We all celebrate each other. If anybody makes a big play, we all celebrate. That’s fun, and it starts with practice.”

(On what needs to be proved during the preseason) “I’m trying to play a big role, be the cornerback three and stay consistent.”

LB JARED IVEY

(On the feeling of being part of the rookie class this year) “Super excited to be a part of that rookie class, to be a part of the Seahawks and the league altogether. It’s just a huge blessing.”

(On how the team performed) “I think we did good. They got stuff going in the second half, but we came out really hot. Those older guys set that type of standard, and that’s what we are trying to live up to when we go out there.”

(On his individual performance) “I think it was good. There were some areas I can definitely get better, but I think I played really well. Super excited to go and attack the next opponent.”

G GREY ZABEL

(On how his first game went) “It went good. Being a rookie, you have to understand that there is going to be wins, and then there are learning experiences. So, learned every single play. Thought we had a few good first few drives, and we were able to move the ball a little bit and protect the quarterback.”

(On how playing with some of the starters in the first quarter) “Yeah, I thought we did well. Obviously, there is always going to be things you have to clean up. I thought we had excellent playmakers behind us that was making our job pretty easy. Any time you have playmakers like that on the outside and behind you, it is fun blocking.”

How loud it got when our defense was out there on third down. I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but I was surprised how awesome our fans were tonight.
