Damien Martinez adds power to Seahawks’ RB Room

When the Seahawks selected RB Damien Martinez in the 2025 NFL Draft, they added another physical and powerful running back. With the 223rd pick in the draft, Seattle found a hidden gem. According to ESPN, Martinez was the 123rd overall prospect in this year’s draft. Which is why at 223rd overall, the selection of Martinez is quite a find for the Seahawks. Adding Damien Martinez gives Seattle a deep running back room which includes Kenneth Walker III, Zach Charbonnet, and Kenny McIntosh.

The Seahawks’ history of taking RBs in late rounds

Damien Martinez joins several other Seahawks running backs who were selected on day three of the NFL Draft. Recently, the Seahawks took RB Kenny McIntosh in the seventh round in 2023, RB DeeJay Dallas in the fourth round in 2020, and RB Travis Homer in the sixth round in 2019. Most notably, the Seahawks selected RB Chris Carson 249th overall in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In 2018 and 2019, Chris Carson had back-to-back seasons rushing over 1,000 yards. Seattle is hoping Martinez’s similar traits as a physical runner can reach Carson’s level of productivity.

Damien Martinez had an impressive college career

As a true freshman at Oregon State, Martinez made a name for himself. Rushing for 982 yards, with four catches for 61 yards, and seven rushing TDs. Martinez also was Pac-12 Offensive Freshmen of the Year and first-team All-Pac-12. He made a repeat appearance to the All-Pac-12 team his sophomore season, with 1,185 yards rushing, 11 catches for 126 yards, and nine rushing TDs. After transferring to Miami, Martinez stayed productive. In 2024 for the Hurricanes, he rushed for 1,002 yards, caught 17 passes for 204 yards, and had 10 rushing TDs.

Where Damien Martinez fits with the Seahawks

Entering 2025, the Seahawks have a stacked running back room with four capable backs, after drafting RB Damien Martinez. Adding depth at the position was important for the Seahawks, with RB Kenneth Walker III becoming a free agent after the 2025 season. Also, Martinez gives the Seahawks a comparable back up to RB Zach Charbonnet. Martinez’s physical rushing style will be exciting to watch when training camp and preseason starts in August.
