Mariners make roster moves including releasing former All-Star

The Mariners continue to whittle down their Major League roster in Peoria, with Friday’s standout move being the release of Neftali Feliz.

The Seattle Mariners made four moves on Friday, as they continued to reduce their Major League camp roster. This included reassigning infielder Nick Dunn and infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor to minor league camp, and optioning right-handed pitcher Will Klein to Triple-A Tacoma.

However, the most significant move was releasing Neftalí Feliz, who was competing for a role in the Mariners bullpen. The Dominican Republic right-handed reliever had previously been signed to a minor league deal with a spring training invite.

It was a low-risk move at the time, with the Mariners hoping Feliz could somehow rediscover some of the form which had previously seen him named an All-Star and American League Rookie of the Year back in 2010. However, it was always going to be a tall task for a player who hasn’t pitched in the Majors since 2021, when he was with the Philadelphia Phillies and then Los Angeles Dodgers. (And even then, he only made five combined Major League appearances.)

Neftalí Feliz just didn’t have it in Peoria

The 36-year-old’s performances during Cactus League play in his second stint with the Mariners, were less than inspiring. He made four appearances and pitched four combined innings, in the process allowing six hits and three earned runs, while only striking out one batter.

For his Major League career as a whole, Feliz has pitched 393.1 combined innings in 362 games over 10 years, producing a 7.3 WAR, 3.55 ERA, 4.06 FIP and 1.130 WHIP. It will be interesting to see if he is signed by another MLB organization or returns to Mexico, where he excelled during the past three years.

Updated Mariners Major League camp roster

With Friday’s moves, the Mariners Major League camp roster is now at 47 players. This breaks down as 36 roster players, one on the 60-day Injured List (Jackson Kowar), and 10 non-roster invitees.

Dunn produced seven hits, one walk, three RBI and five runs in 20 at-bats in Cactus League play, while Taylor similarly had seven hits in 20 at-bats, also recording one home run, seven RBI and four runs. Meanwhile, Klein pitched 5.0 combined innings and allowed five hits, three walks and four runs — two earned –while striking out eight batters.
