Seahawks’ Mike Macdonald is taking a cautionary approach to the  NFL Combine

With a year of on-field coaching under his belt, head coach Mike Macdonald attended his first  NFL Combine as a head coach.  Macdonald was a nonparticipant last year due to his late hiring as the Seahawks’ new head coach.  General   Manager  John Schneider and the scouts attended the combine while Macdonald stayed at the VMac and held alignment meetings with his newly hired assistant coach at the time. For Macdonald, the combine process has been both a learning and fun experience.

“Oh, it’s a lot of fun. You know, we’re catching up from the coach’s perspective. So, John and the guys have done a great job setting it up, where our position coaches can drive the interview. It’s funny, each interview takes a form of itself and you think 20 minutes probably isn’t an optimum time for someone to get to know a player as well as you want,” said Macdonald. “But it’s funny how much those personalities come out in that time. So, it’s been a lot of fun.”

Macdonald has attended previous combines as a positional coach. Now that he is attending the combine as a head coach, Macdonald has taken a back seat role to gather a broader perspective in the evaluation process.

“Yeah. Well, I’m trying to get caught up. So just kind of any and everything you’re trying to take in is my perspective. So, all these little data points that you collect along the way. No one really knows which data point means what, or there’s all these different variables in play. But to me, it’s, can we collect the most data we can possibly get, most observations, most information, and use that to make the best decision we can.”

DRAFT TRENDS

After a dreadful showing in a run game that saw the Seahawks finish 28th, Macdonald fired offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb and hired Klint Kubiak as his replacement.  With Kubiak at the helm of the offense, the Seahawks are expected to implement an outside zone running scheme. Macdonald was asked what he likes in the wide zone running game.

“Well, the first thing is it lets the offensive line run off the ball. So that’s just you’ve got. Defensive lines nowadays, it’s just too hard to consistently move a guy that’s just right on top of you 60 plays a game. So you got to get these guys (on the offensive line) running, trying to get the defensive line moving, going against that scheme, definitely.”

GENO IS STAYING !

Until they trade or extend Geno Smith’s contract  Macdonald will continue to be asked if Geno Smith will be the team’s starting quarterback in 2025.

“  I do and I have gotten that question a lot . And I’ve answered it  pretty consistently,” said Macdonald when asked about Geno Smith.

The other repetitive question Macdonald answered was regarding DK Metcalf’s drop in numbers .

“Well, from my understanding going into the Atlanta game (in which he got hurt), I think he was top of the league and targets. I’m not sure where the numbers were, but it’s that trend of focus around the offense that we’re shooting for. Then to Jax’s (Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s) credit and DK not being a hundred percent (healthy) throughout probably the second, third quarter of the season. It speaks to Jax’s development, but we want to get the ball to DK. We want to make sure that he’s a focal point in our offense, for sure.”
