Huskies send Seniors on high note become bowl eligible

Friday night’s 31-19 win by the Washington Huskies over the UCLA Bruins propelled the program in multiple ways. The win extended the Huskies’ unbeaten home streak to 20 games. The last Husky loss at home was in the 2021 Apple Cup. Also on display Friday night was the program’s future, and its rich heritage of defensive dominance was acknowledged.

Just as important, the win made the Huskies Bowl eligible in Head Coach Jeff Fisch’s first year with the program. A bowl bid would give the Huskies 13 additional practice and another game to jump-start year two under Fisch.

” Okay. Great win. Great win for our team. Great one for our seniors. A great one for the program. Go out there and have a chance to do it again in December. So certainly excited about the opportunity of 15 more practices and go compete for a bowl game championship. You know, we will certainly enjoy tonight, and we’ll enjoy this weekend as we’ll have these next 13 days to prepare for the number one team in the country,” said Fisch in his post-game press conference.

Fisch referred to the Huskies’ upcoming game against the Oregon Ducks in Eugene. Friday night’s win ensured the program’s seniors’ last game at Husky Stadium was a win.

FUTURE IS HERE

In addition to giving the Seniors their flowers, Friday was also about the Husky’s future.

Senior quarterback Will Rodgers started and was replaced by freshman Desmond Williams Jr. Rodgers had had a good season but struggled in Friday’s game, completing 13 of 21 pass attempts for 115 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Williams Jr. led the Huskies to three second-half scoring drives , completing 7 of 8 passes for 67 yards and one touchdown. Junior running back Jonah Coleman rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns for the second time in three games.

DOMINANT DEFENSIVE DISPLAY

Junior defensive lineman Russell Davis II led a dominating defense effort that sacked former Husky quarterback six times and forced two fumbles. Davis II had two of the six sacks. While the performance did not bring comparisons the 1991 Championship winning defense, Husky’s ability to apply pressure was key to the dominant display, according to senior linebacker Alphonzo Tuputala

“Being able to just put pressure on Garbers and, you know, give pressure and allow the back end to stick man-to-man coverage and, you know, there’s lways going to be things to work on as an overall defense, but today we got the win and that’s all that matters.”

The dominant display by the defense raised hopes for Husky Nation that the program’s defense can quickly climb back to the upper echelon of college football’s top elite units. Yes it will take time to play comparable to the 1991 . Fisch believes Friday’s win and the humbling 35-6 loss to Penn State will serve the program in it’s quest of quickly returning to being an elite program in college football.

“We’re trying to lay a foundation for what I think will be a fantastic run here in years to come. And what this program hasn’t had for a long time now is coaches that have been here a long time and guys that have been able to keep the system in place and try to have stability and try to not have four head coaches in six years like our six year seniors have had. So it’s our goal to really be able to build this thing.” the right way and then see what we can do to see how much better we can get each year.

TWO MORE GAMES

The Huskies will have a 13-day break before taking on the No.1 ranked Oregon Ducks on November 30th and then a Bowl invite.
