A narrow but well executed escape has the Seahawks atopt the NFC West Division with a 2-0 record. Yes it’s early but 2-0 is 2-0. Up next for the Seahawks is the 1-1 Miami Dolphins who will be without franchise quarterback Tua Tagovailoa who placed on the IR list due to another concussion.
UNKNOWN COMMODITY AT QUARTERBACK
Stepping in for Tagovailoa is Skyla Thompson who will get his first NFL start since 2022. With a small sample size of recent game film on Thompson the Seahawks will focus on the Dolphins tendencies as an offense .
“Right now what information you’re going to go off of, you’re going to go off of preseason, you’re going to go off of the last game Skylar (Thompson) started for those guys, probably the end of the last game. So again, you’re early in the year, it’s tough to make assumptions on what’s going to change. So trying to just go off of trying to stick to our usual procedure as much as we can. And then what we think about Skylar (Thompson) and go from there.”
LETHAL RUNNING ATTACK
One of those tendencies that Miami is efficient at is running the ball. The Dolphins rush attack is led De’Von Achance. The multiple dimensional back rushed rushed for 96yards on 22 carries and led the team with seven receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown. Ironically the Seahawks run defense struggled in the team overtime 23-20 win over the New England Patriots. Issue with the Seahawks run defense has been allowing yards after contact , something the Achance does well in the Dolphins complicate run scheme.
“Yeah, they do a great job of attacking on the perimeter with their perimeter blocking and the angles that they create. And then also, I don’t think they get enough credit for inside interior-type runs, being able to cut defenses and yards after contact, things like that. And then if you’re not on your Ps and Qs in the play action game and the catch-and-run game, if you’re not taking great angles, they’ll make you pay because it’s a lot of catch-and-run type of ideas and then run past you, and so your leverage, your angles, and your pursuit need to be on point, otherwise they’ll run past you and we don’t want that.”
RUN GAME
While the defense focus on the run game the Seahawks offense will need to create a rung ame of it’s own. Against the Patriots the Seahawks managed just 46 rushing yards on 19 attempts averaging a mere 2.4 yard per carry. The Dolphins run defense is ranked 15th overall , allowing opponents an average of 118 yards per game. If the Seahawks are to unleash their running game, they will need better from the offensive line.
“We got to find our calling card. We have a lot of good stuff going on, but we’re trying to find our sweet spot right now, said Macdonald when asked about the lack of a running game. “That’s where we’re at. I think we have a pretty good plan started right now during the week and excited to see us go do it today in practice.”
