Three things we learned from Seahawks 23-20 OT win over the Patriots

After being deadlocked in regulation, the Seahawks’ defense forced a Patriots three-and-out, and the offensive took care of business with a game-winning 8-play, 71-yard drive that ended with a Jason Myers 31-yard field goal.

THE PASS GAME CAN OPEN THE RUN

With a sputtering run game, Ryan Grubb used Geno Smith’s precious arm to open the Patriot’s defense. Smith completed 33 of 44 passes for 327 yards and one touchdown. His ability to scan the field and read defenses saw multiple receivers get their hands on the ball. Jackson Smith-Njigba had a career-high 12 receptions for 117 yards, and DK Metcalf had ten receptions for 129 yards and one touchdown.  As always, with DK, he had a couple of highlight plays. On his   56 TD reception, he blew past the Patriots defenders, and on his second highlight reception, Metcalf made the catch and hurdled the Patriots defender Jonathan Jones for a nine-yard again.

Tyler Lockett had two receptions for  15 yards, which played a critical role in the game. Lockett was also interfered with, resulting in a Seahawk’s first down. Zach Charbonnet had five receptions for 31 yards, Jake Bob had two receptions for 15 yards, and Noah Fant and Lavisha Shenault Jr. each had one reception.

FEW BUT EFFECTIVE RUNS

The Seahawks rushed for 46 yards total—yes, 46 yards the whole game, 21 in the first half, and 25 in the second half. Zach Charbonnet had 38 yards on 14 carries, and Geno Smith had the other eight on five carries. Charbonnet’s most significant contribution to the game was his nine-yard run at the Patriots’ 22-yard line in overtime. After the run, Myers trotted onto the field for the game-winning field goal.

THE SEAHAWKS HAVE A LEGIT  DEFENSIVE LINE

Despite giving up 185 rushing yards, the defensive line made the big plays when needed. Leonard Williams had four quarterback hits and finished the day with 1.5 sacks, his first of the season. Speaking of firsts, rookie Byron  Murphy recorded the first sack of his career. Jarran Reed was credited with six tackles, three of which were solo. His push-up front and Jonathan Hankins’s three tackles had Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett running for his life for the majority of the game.

INJURY UPDATES

Mike Macdonald gave the following injury updates, Boye Mafe had a knee contusion and he will okay. Jerome Baker  had a hamstring injury  and Macdonald said he will be fine after the game .
