The decision for Sounders Obed Vargas was simple its impact was life changing. The Sounders budding star announced this week that he had completed the required FIFA paperwork to switch his national team status. Obed will now be allowed to represent the Mexico National team instead of the United States.
“I started in the US system. I started playing for the Sounders, the US was the first team that reached out to me,” Vargas said. “And how could I give up an opportunity to play for the US? The US gave me a lot and I felt so honored to represent them. But I thought it was the right moment for me to make this switch and play for the team I wanted to play for.”
The decision to represent the El Trio was from his heart rather than any tactical ploy to fast-track his participation on the International stage
“The thought process was simple for me: It’s the team I grew up watching,” Vargas said.
“This decision, I left everything aside, all the benefits, anything that any national team could possibly offer me – and I just made it with my heart ,”It’s a way for me to honor my family, my culture. My whole family is Mexican. So it was just the team I grew up watching, the team I feel the most love towards Vargas added.
A GOOD TIME TO MAKE UP HIS FUTURE
Varga’s choice comes at an opportune time as his maturation on the pitch has enabled him to be a full-time starter for the Rave Green after a back injury cut his season last year. In 2020 Vargas started 10 of 13 regular season games before the medical staff decided to shut him for the season. This season Vargas has started 13 of 14 games across all competitions. Vargas scored his first professional goal with the Sounders on April 30th in the team’s 3-2 win at Philadelphia.
