Seattle Reign FC faced Kansas City Current on Wednesday tying 0-0 after 90 minutes. Reign coach Laura Harvey met KC coach and friend Vlatko Andonovski in a friendly rivalry. KC came into the game ranked near the top of the table while the Reign had just ended their 5-game loss streak.
First Half
Throughout the whole game, Reign keeper Laurel Ivory shined through making critical saves. She earned the player of the match title and probably a few new highlight reels. The saves started early in the match as KC came out fast. Harvey had expected this and her players were prepared to weather the storm.
In just the 8th minute KC forward Cooper took a shot from just outside the box, Ivory was ready for it and got a hand on it to deflect the ball in a beautiful leaping save.
Attacks were made by both teams as the first half progressed. In the 32nd minute KC midfielder Lavogez crossed the ball towards the net where it took an unlucky bounce off of Reign defender Sofia Huerta towards the goal, calling on Ivory who made the critical save. Huerta then put the ball out of play and the Reign could take a breath after a scary chance.
Again in first half added minutes Ivory makes another impressive save after being knocked to the ground during a scramble for the ball in the 45th+3. Ivory’s performance in the first half was nothing less than inspiring as she made not only crucial but also beautiful saves.
Second Half
The second half wasn’t any easier on Ivory as the Current kept pressing, demanding the keeper have a brilliant performance. Although Ivory hasn’t been the Reign’s starting keeper when Claudia Dickey is available, she is proving that she has earned her place.
Ivory has already been nominated for save of the week, and it would be surprising to not see her nominated again after this performance.
Upcoming Cascadia Rivalry
Although the Reign’s game ended 0-0 it kept fans at the edge of their seats thanks to Ivory’s player of the match winning performance. As the season continues the Reign will face their Cascadia rival the Portland Thorns. More than just a strong goal keeping performance will be necessary to please the players and fans. The game will kick off in Portland at 7pm PT this Saturday May 11th.
