Seattle Reign Come Back to Defeat San Diego 2-1

Seattle Reign FC won their game against San Diego 2-1 after going down to 10 players just nine minutes into the game. This was the teams’ second meeting of the season coming only 34 days after their first, which ended 1-0 in favor of San Diego. Coming into the game Seattle was on a five match losing streak, however the players were confident their moment was coming soon.

First Half

Just 9 minutes into the game Tziarra King received a red card for “violent conduct” while attempting to shake off Hanna Lundkvist. After video review the Referee decided to issue the red, a harsh decision given the timing of the foul. Two minutes later San Diego took advantage of their position and Carousa found the back of the net, her first attempt bounced off of the crossbar. It was looking like quite the uphill battle for the Reign as they were looking at playing the remaining 80 minutes of the game with 10 players and 1 goal down.

After two yellow cards were issued one to Reign midfielder James-Turner and one to San Diego’s Lundkvist. In the 33rd minute the San Diego keeper failed to clear the ball from her box while Balcer made an attack, won the ball and fired it into the empty net. Balcer lit up the crowd and the tie game reignited the crowd’s energy.

By the end of halftime three more yellow cards had been issued bringing the card count of the first half to six, five yellows and one red.

Second Half

Things were tense during the second half, the game could go either way with both teams making attacks. In the 89th minute Seattle had a free kick from outside the box, Ji sent the ball into the box where Latsko was waiting to flick the ball towards goal, her header sent the ball straight into the top corner. The crowd erupted as they realized this game might make their first win since their opener this season.

During the 9 minutes of added time the tension in the building was palpable as San Diego created a few more chances to tie the game again. As the game reached the end of added time there was a foul in the Reign’s box. The referee went to review the footage and determined that San Diego’s McNabb had committed a foul against Fishlock and was given a red card. That was the last card of the game totaling the count to 10, 8 yellow cards, and 2 red cards. This game created a new record for most cards in a game in the NWSL’s history.

Seattle Reign FC held San Diego off for the rest of overtime and came out with the win. San Diego has never gotten a point at Lumen Field. This win ended the Reign’s loss streak and had proved that their moment was coming and this might be the turning point they were looking for.
