Stefan Frei recording his 107th career shutout was the good news. The bad news was the Sounders were also shut out in their goalless draw with FC Dallas. Both teams had chances to snatch all three points in the showdown of two Western Conference foes looking to jump-start their season.
The first twenty minutes of Saturday’s contest between FC Dallas and Sounders FC resembled two heavyweight boxers in the early rounds of a title fight. Both sides threw some early jabs feeling out the opponent. FC Dallas had the best chance to score early in the match. Dallas defender Eugene Ansah’s spinning curve ball was saved by Stefan Frei, who had to save the ball and push it off to the side. The home side continued to dominate the possession battle but were unable to find another clear chance at goal.
SOUNDERS GET INTO THE GAME
The Sounders were able to settle into the game through disciplined defense which led to sustained possession. With the sustained possession the Sounders created some lethal chances. Jordan Morris’s left-footed shot in the 30th forced a tough save by FC Dallas keeper Maarten Paes. The Rave Green’s best chance of the half came in the 41st minute when Cristian Roldan’s right-footed shot went wide of an open goal.
SLOW START TO THE SECOND HALF
The second half started just like the first with FC Dallas on the front foot and looking more likely to score than the Sounders who were heavy-legged to start the second frame. Another brilliant save by Frei this one in the 49th minute of a Paul Arriola right-footed blast gave the Sounders a chance of bagging all three points. Sebastian Lletget had a chance to give the home side all three points in the 58th minute but his header from close range went wide of the Sounders goal.
UNABLE TO FIND THE GO AHEAD GOAL
The Sounders had possession spells in the second half but they were not sustained and led to just one good chance at goal. Cristian Roldan’s cross in the 58th minute to a streaking Jordan Morris who head the ball over the goal. One bright spot in the second half was the insertion of Joao Paulo in the 65th minute. It was Paulo’s second straight game action, dealing with a hip injury. With neither side able to deliver the knockout punch both sides split the spoils. It was a just result while no one deserved to win , no one deserved to lose.
