The Seahawks have found one replacement to fill the seismic hole left by the departures of Bobby Wagner and Jordyn Brooks. Thursday afternoon the team announced it had signed former Bills inside linebacker Tyrel Dodson.
The former UDFA out of Texas A& AM spent his entire five-year career with the Bills. It was A career with a bumpy start and uncertain whether Dodson would make it as an NFL Player. As a rookie in 2019, Dodson was arrested, accused of domestic violence, and was suspended by the NFL for six games after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct.
In a remarkable turnaround of character four years later Dodson was named an NFLPA Community Award along with Bills teammate Damar Hamlin. The award made the two players eligible to be named recipients of the NFLA Alan Page Community Award, the highest honor the NFLPA can bestow upon a player.
ON THE FIELD GROWTH
It is no coincidence that Dodson’s maturity off the field raised his performance on the field. Dodson played in twelve games and started just two games between the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In 2022 Dodson played nine games and started three. Last year was Dodson’s breakout season. He capitalized on an opportunity in which he started for an injured Matt Milano five games into the season and never relinquished the starting role. Dodson finished the season with 74 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. Pro Football Focus rated Dodson as its top linebacker with superior pass coverage and run-defense abilities.
GENO SMITH GETS A TESTED BACKUP
The Seahawk’s immediate need at quarterback was filled when the team announced that it had traded for Commanders quarterback Sam Howell. Seattle sent the Commanders a third (78th) and fifth-round pick (152th) and received Howell along with a Fourth(102th) and Sixth (179th) round. “We were kind of sweating that this morning,” Seahawks GM John Schneider said during his weekly interview on Seattle Sports 710. “Other teams were also inquiring about Howell,”. When Washington announced it had signed Marcus Mariota on Wednesday Howell became expendable.
During the radio interview, Schnieder was clear that Howell would back up Smith
“We were just really excited to be able to acquire him. We know he’s a serious dude. He’s into it, he works his tail off, “said Schnieder. “We got great reviews on him and we loved him coming out of college. So yeah, we’re happy to get him in the mix. Geno’s the guy and Sam will be backing him up.”
Howell started all 17 games for the Commanders last year and threw an NFL-high 612 passes and finished with 3,946 yards which was 12 best in the league. He also threw 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions and was sacked an NFL-high 65 times.
