During Sunday’s post-game press conference, the Seahawks veteran leader’s common theme regarding the 2023 season, was a squandered opportunity. Yes, Geno Smith, Quandre Diggs, Bobby Wagner, and Tyer Lockett were satisfied with another dramatic win. But the big picture is that Sunday’s 21-20 win over the Arizona Cardinals was the last game of the season because of a lack of execution at the right time. While the win showcased the team’s heart and desire the head-scratching question is why did it take a near-death experience for the team to play it’s best football.
It’s hard to find one game in which the team played a complete football game from start to finish. Resilience, determination and a never-say-die mentality is hard to sustain for 18 weeks. Especially if it is your first or second year in the NFL . Those traits are needed in the rigors of an NFL season. What is more important and sustainable but harder to attain is consistency day in and day out.
One of the hardest things to learn, attain, and keep is a winning mindset.
Sunday’s win over the Cardinals was a microcosm of the Seahawks’ season. The Seahawks led 13-6 at halftime and started the third quarter with their offense on the field. Any points by the offense would have left the Cardinals on their heels and chasing the game. Instead, the Seahawks punted the ball after three plays and the Cardinals tied the game after three offensive plays. Three more inept offensive series by the Seahawks saw the Cardinals muster enough offense to take a 20-13 lead early in the fourth quarter.
ANOTHER GREAT FINISH BUT ?
Arizona kicker Matt Prater’s first miss of the game gave the Seahawks life after another dismal three-and-out by the offense. With 2:56 left in the game and down seven points Geno Smith hit Tyler Lockett on a 34 yard strike. The drive was Smith’s seventh go-ahead touchdown pass in the 4th or OT this season. The most in NFL history. The 4-play 67-yard drive took a whole 1:02 seconds.
Down one point at 20-19, Head Coach Pete Carroll turned riverboat gambler and went for two. The Smith to Lockett combo hit lighting twice to give the Seahawks a 21-20 lead with 1:54 left in the game. Speaking of hitting lighting twice, Prater went wide right on his second miss of the game to preserve the win for the Seahawks who finished the season third in the NFC West with a 9-8 season.
