After an impressive win in which his team finished the deal Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was bouncing with optimism during his Monday weekly press conference with the media. Carroll was pleased about the way his team played in the second half while empathizing that the team has plenty of room for improvement.
First up and good news to Seahawk fans was a positive injury update on several players. Some sat out the win over the Panthers while several were banged up in Sunday’s contest.
INJURY UPDATE
Tre Brown) “He got banged pretty good. He got hit in the face and also hit his head, but he’s doing well as far as these early stages in how they evaluate the concussion. They’re hopeful that he can make it through the week.”
(On if Riq Woolen has a chance to play this week) “Yes. We have to get him to practice and get going on Thursday and get him cranking. He’s going to have to prove he’s okay, that he can move and feel alright and do the stuff he needs to do. We won’t know until he gets out there. He’s not that uncomfortable now, it’ll be determined by how he can handle it.”
(On how Coby Bryant is feeling) “He is really determined to play this week. He was really feisty about it, he wanted to see if he could do something last week. We’ll see what happens. We just have to make sure and take care of him. It’s a different injury, but it’s similar to his other foot. He’s been through this before. It’s not nearly as bad it was last time. We just have to wait and see and see if he can handle it.”
(On Dre’Mont Jones’ health) “He had some tightness in his hip that kind of gave him some lower back stuff too. He has a couple of things connected and he kind of just stoved up a little bit too much to keep going.”
(On if Jamal Adams will be 100% against the Giants) “Judging from the practices that he’s had in the past couple of weeks, he’ll be ready to go. We just have to make it through the week and make sure that everything goes right. There will be no restrictions at all.”
(On an update on Abe Lucas) “I don’t have an update on him. We have not talked about him. He’s still a couple of weeks, I don’t know. He looks great getting around and moving around. He’s very unencumbered.”
(On Darrell Taylor’s health) “The thought is that he has a chance to be okay this week. He got banged. He’s got a pretty good bruise or something like that. The guy kicked him in the shin.”
THIRD DOWN ISSUES
One of the areas of improvement Carroll was adamant about was the team the team’s third down conversion. In the first half, the team was a dismal 1 of 8 and finished the game just 3 of 13.
We weren’t as clean as we needed to be on some stuff that we have to adjust. We have to adapt. We’re not as sharp as we need to be. We have guys that can do stuff, and Geno (Smith) can deliver it, we were protecting okay; we need to hook it up. We’re in the process of fixing some things up. The ones that really matter was we got close, down inside the 30 (yard-line) and all.”
SHUFFLED BUT EFFECTIVE
The Offensive line wen through another reshuffle before the Panthers game. Rookie Anthony Bradford stated at right guard for Phil Haynes . After a sluggish first half. The line gained confidence and trust in each other. The result was 25 secon d half points and most importantly no sacks after giving up two in the first half.
“A couple things. One, that they were really poised and composed about handling the situation and nobody lost their minds and got crazy or nervous or out of whack at all. They were really chill about the way they handled it. They played against really good players, marquee rushers and handled those guys. They threw a lot of stuff at them scheme-wise, and they adjusted well, communicated really well.”
In essence, what they did that I think was probably the most remarkable was that they played with a lot of confidence. You have to give a lot of credit to Andy (Dickerson) and Keli’itou (Kekuewa) for what they’ve done with those guys, to get them to this point. That was a really big accomplishment. It just gives us such confidence in our depth and ability to move guys when we need to, to catch whatever is going to come our way. (I’m) just really happy for those guys.”
Carroll was asked to assess the play of the rookie Anthony Bradford
“He played really tough. You might’ve thought in a situation like that he’d be jumping offsides, and I thought about it, ‘He’s played down there at LSU in front of as big of a crowd as you can see in college football, and the noise and all of that.’ It didn’t bother him. He played really well; he is a very physical kid. When you guys get a chance to watch him play some, you’ll see in games that it’ll be four, five,or six plays that he’ll knock somebody down hard. And he finishes a block, in a tough manner.
He’s looking for those opportunities. (He’s) a very physical football player, and he can back it up. He runs well for a big man and he’s three bills (300 lbs.) plus, and he’s way out there. He’s just learning, he’s just getting going. He did a lot of really positive things, and he was very comfortable in the setting, and he had a very good guy he was playing against.”
THUNDER AND LIGHTING
Ken Walker III and rookie Zach Charbonnet combined for 143 of the team 146 net rushing yards. Geno Smith had a run of -4 yards. Dee Day Dallas had the other carry and that was for seven yards. With Walker rushing for 97 yards and Charbonnett 46 Carroll is encouraged by the two running backs contrasting but effective styles
“Over a long time, I’ve just found that sometimes one guy is on, and the other guy isn’t, or vice versa. You don’t know who it’s going to be. If you mix your guys and you feel confident about rotating them some to keep them fresh and to keep them really on their game, sometimes you just see that things go one way or the other. I always thought it was a real positive and it makes us a little more dynamic in
The Seahawk’s next game will be Monday Night in New York against the Giants. The extra day before game day has pushed the player’s practice schedule back a few days. Players will have Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday off and return to practice Thursday.
REST &OF PETE CARROL QUOTES
(On his plan for Jamal Adams in the defense) “We’re in good shape. We’re in really good shape with that. We know what we’re doing. We’ll always be flexible to expand and stuff, but right now we have a really good plan for it. We can’t do everything all at once, you just have to work your way through it, and just start playing the game again. He’s not going to be the focal point of everything, we’re just going to let him join back in with the guys, get out in the huddle, break the huddle, and play football. We’ll get going and we’ll see how it goes.”
(On Quandre Diggs and Julian Love making it back from injury in time for Sunday’s game) “That was remarkable for both of those guys to make it back. They both had issues. They were issues that we documented, but they were able to rehab properly and take every advantage of the week to get out there. They played really capably under those circumstances. Both of those guys have came out just fine, and the extra day helps. They should be back and going.”
(On how Julian Love has played through three weeks) “He’s doing really well. He’s handling a ton of stuff, he’s doing all kinds of things, he’s been active. He’s got some plays that he’d like back just like everybody else. But all in all, he’s done a terrific job and shown really good versatility and has helped us on teams as well.”
(On if he will play Julian Love and Jamal Adams together) “Just wait. We’ll just wait.”
(On Jarran Reed’s performance) “Oh man. That’s the best game he’s played since he’s been with us, at any time. I don’t remember any games when he was away from us that were any better. That was a complete football game. Run, pass, effort, his pursuit out of the pile, chasing screens on the perimeter, excellent. He came through in big situations with big plays. He practiced one day last week was all he got. He of all the guys had the worst injury. We were really fired up about that.”
(On if Devon Witherspoon has the ability to process plays faster than anyone else) “I think he has a special instinct about the game that separates himself. He’s a normal-sized player, he’s not the big guy. He’s really fast and really quick and he’s got all of those attributes, but he’s not off the charts that way. It is his ability to analyze and go for it to make the plays. He’s got a playmaker mentality. He’s going to make the play and get his hands on the ball to get the pick, or the big hit. You saw him make a marvelous hit out on the perimeter that he went for. (It’s) that natural instinct that separates some guys. They just have more awareness than others. I’ve tried to explain that to you by giving you examples of other guys that have been obvious to me. He looks like he’s on his way to showing everybody.”
(On how having multiple tight ends helps the offense and if it takes away targets from receivers) “It’s a good part of our game because guys are versatile, they can do things, our guys can block and they compliment in the styles of blocks and the way we use them. It’s a nice part of our package. It does take the receivers off the field in the plays that you’re in it. We have one guy out there. There’s some give and take there. We like the versatility; we like the power you get when you load it up on the edges. Our guys are versatile enough that when we go in there, we’re not just running the football, we’re using those guys to do what they can do.”
(On if Will Dissly will play Monday night) “I don’t know that. We have to wait and see. We’re not sure yet.”
(On Jaxon Smith-Njigba so far) “He’s doing everything fine. He’s doing just fine. He hasn’t got the ball a lot yet, but there’s no reason for that other than we’re just mixing it up.”
(On Geno Smith’s interception) “He jammed the ball in there, he felt like they were going to be giving a lot of space, it was long yardage, we were just trying to make some yards to punt the football. He just stuck one in there, the linebacker went the way he wasn’t supposed to go, he went opposite where we thought he was going to go and made a nice play on the football. Give them credit on that one.”
(On Geno Smith’s second-half) “It was fantastic second half for him. It was a fantastic finish. It was all part of the finish. Everybody played really well and kept moving forward. We’re behind at halftime. The halftime approach was very directed at coming out and making sure that we were on fire with our effort and energy in the third quarter. We had done that last week as well and wanted to see if we could do it at home and be different from the last time we were there. It was a big deal. Guys played really well, and Geno (Smith) was in the middle of all of that. He was really on target.”
(On what happened to Coby Bryant’s toe) “What happened to it was he bent it back too far, is basically what happened. I’m not sure exactly what he did, I thought he did it in the game.”
(On Artie Burns playing inside corner) “It was really out of necessity to start with. We just needed the next guy up, and we went to the guy with background experience. It wasn’t a new guy in the system because he’s been around the meetings. Artie (Burns) is a really good cover dude. He’s really efficient, really good technique wise, he’s really learned our stuff and we love the way he handles the line of scrimmage. He just picked it up and went for it. Artie has come back with a new determination, kind of like a new look at the game. He’s just been on his stuff. He’s had to play a lot of the running game stuff, which was not part of his background. He’s been really solid of fitting into the defense and all. I’m really fired up about this camp for him and how he started the season.”
(On if it’s uncommon for someone like Artie Burns to be able to learn a new position eight or new years into a career) “You could say that because you pigeon-hole guys. The other side of that is that he’s been around a lot of football, and he’s seen a lot of ball. He’s made sense of things more quickly than a younger guy would. He had a perfect play on the ball he knocked down on the sidelines. Great one-on-one matchup, press on the line of scrimmage, it’s just you and guy, and he played it so poised, (he) knocked the ball out, it was great play.”
(On an update on Tre Brown) “He got banged pretty good.
(On Michael Jackson’s performance) “Mike (Jackson) did really well. Mike played a beautiful game yesterday. A couple knockdowns, a couple of nice tackles. The play on the sidelines, he’s all over the guy, and they make it a great play and just barely made it inbounds. I was kind of fighting for him, challenging that one. He did a really good job. He came off the bench and jumped right back at it.”
