Game week prep is finally here for the Seattle Seahawks who take on the Los Angeles Rams Sunday afternoon at Lumen Field. Sunday’s meeting between the two NFC West rivals will be the 50th with the Seahawks holding a 27-22 advantage. The Rams have won six of 10 games with Seattle recording a rare season sweep last year.
THE RAMS BAD SEASON SEAHAWKS GOOD SEASON
Rams will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing season. The Seahawks on the other end will be looking to gain momentum from last year’s playoff appearance. The Seahawk’s offseason has been relatively quiet. Top draft pick Devon Witherspoon’s slow-healing hamstring has been the one concern.
The quick return of Jordyn Brooks from last season-ending knee injury was a pleasant surprise as was the play of Jaxon Smith- Njigba who underwent hand surgery. Here is what Pete Carroll had to say about the team’s preparation for the Rams.
One big challenge for the team according to Carroll will be how quickly the players will familiarize each other with a real game-like condition.
“Part of the issue is that not everybody has played a lot. There’s not a lot of football. They haven’t played their guys and we haven’t played our guys a lot. It’s just getting out there and getting going. If you remember the first preseason game, we tackled for garbage in the first quarter, and then we got going and everything was okay from that point after that. You have to get going. Both teams are faced with the same thing in that regard, so it’s kind of even. I always go back to the college days, you never had any preseason games, you just played, and you’d go against a great matchup and expect everybody to play really good. That’s what we’re doing here too.”
The Seahawks are the third youngest team in the NFL with 14 rookies on their 53-man roster. Another 19 players have just one year of NFL experience. That means the Seahawks a total of 33 players who are under the age of 25 and have one year of NFL experience
“Yeah, this is a championship game for us. We’re going to give everything we got and I expect everybody to do that through the preparation on the field off the field and when it comes to game time. So how do I manage it? Hopefully really well and we’ll see what happens. We have a way that we talk about it and a way that we’ve built our mentality for starting this thing off and this is the biggest game that we will play and that’s how we’re going about it. They’ve got to learn how to handle that.”
GOOD NEWS ON THE INJURY FRONT
With just two more practice days remaining several players are hoping to overcome nagging injuries and be cleared to play on Sunday. While he expects Jaxon Smith-Njigba to play on Sunday Carroll took a cautionary approach when asked about Mike Morris and Derick Hall.
“Today will be important to see them again, but Mike (Morris) had a really good Monday, and Derick (Hall) was a little bit limited on Monday. We’ll see how he does today, but those guys are working to see if they can find their way back in”
Top draft pick Devon Witherspoon is expected to practice
“He’s practicing. He’ll go today and we’ll see how he does. They’re still monitoring a little bit with his numbers, but he’s going to get out there and go. He’ll be going full speed today.” Carrol noted that the team is expecting Jamal Adams to start practicing next week.”
