Mariners George Kirby and Julio Rodriguez hold their own in All-Star Game performances

Mariner pitcher Luis Castillo was the lone Marine player who did not play in Tuesday’s All-Star Game. American League Manager Dusty Baker said after the game that Castillo was on an emergency basis because he had pitched on Friday. The Mariner’s other two representatives showed up and showed out

GEORGE KIRBY

Had a decent outing in which he pitched the top of the 4th inning. Gave up a double to  J. D. Martinez,  but was able to force Nolan  Arenado to ground out to third. Kirby flirted with danger and paid the press when allowed a  Luis Arraes single to right field which then scored  Martinez.   The danger almost catastrophic when Sean Murphy hit a long fly ball that was headed over the right field wall until Adolis Garci leaped plucked the ball out of the air and kept it from sailing over the yellow line. Luis Arraez attempted to steal second base during  Corbin Carroll’s at-bat.  He was initially ruled safe but a subsequent review overturned the initial call and ruled him out and the inning ended

JULIO RODRIGUEZ  TOP OF THE SIXTH

His presence brought on chants of “Julio, Julio Julio”  and the reader board immediately published the no-fly sign graphic. Unfortunately for the home crowd, nothing flew into Rodroriguez’s no-fly zone and he saw no action during the defensive half-inning.

RODRIGUEZ  ONE FINAL CHANCE

Bottom of the seventh with one out and facing NL pitcher Camilo Doval the Julio, Julio, Julio chants were deafening. Rodriguez tried and he might went down swinging much to the dismay of the crowd. Down 3-2 Rodriguez had one more bite of the cherry in the top of the eighth inning.

With a runner on first base and two out Rodriguez was selfless at the plate and manufactured a walk that electrified the home crowd. With a runner on first and second the Cleveland Guardians Jose Ramirez went down swinging to end the game.

The Mariners lost the battle but in the end, won the war. The hope is that the three players continue to pay well and inspire their teammates in the second half of the season
