Monday Rewind With Pete Carroll

Each Monday head coach Pete Carroll meets with local media and takes a look back at Sunday’s game after looking at film and speaking with players and coaches.

On Monday Carroll confirmed that wide receiver DK Metcalf will not need surgery after receiving  MIR test results.  After Sunday’s win over the Chargers Carroll said Xray at that time showed no significant damage and the MIR results would be the final determinant on the extent of  Metcalf’s injury. So, with the good news, Carroll was asked when  Metcalf would be available.

“I don’t know about when he can get back, I don’t really have a clue on that one. I know that he is really anxious to try to make his way back. In his mind, he wants to practice Wednesday. I don’t know if that’s even possible. He’s still pretty sore today, but because there is no immediate process to go through as far as surgeries and stuff like that, they have to see how he responds to treatment and see what happens. I’m sorry that I don’t have any more specifics for you, that’s why I’m being really vague.”

With all of that being said Carroll was asked if Metcalf is definitely out for the Giants game on Sunday.

I don’t know that. I’m going to leave it wide open on that one. I know what he wants to do, so I’m going to kind of follow him a little bit on this one. I’m sorry, I can’t call it. Give us a couple of days to let it cool down and see what’s going on. He won’t get extensive work on Wednesday regardless. We are going to take care of him, make sure that we are doing the right thing, and we will just see. Unfortunately, we don’t know.”

WIDE RECEIVER DEPTH

During the press conference, Carroll was asked the obvious follow-up question regarding the depth of the team’s receiving corps without DK Metcalf and if the team planned on signing another wideout.

“Well, we are looking at everything. There is a lot of unknown right now about his situation, so we have to be open to the possibilities of whatever. I know John (Schneider) is on it and we have talked about it already. We are going with our guys, that’s what we are counting on, and we are going to count on these guys to come through and do a good job.”

MARQUIS GOODWIN WILL CONTINUE TO GET MORE PLAYING TIME

With DK’s status uncertain for the immediate future wide receiver  Marquis Goodwin is set to get more playing because of the way he performed against the Chargers and in the practice, sessions leading up to the game. Goodwin hauled down two touchdowns and had a team-high  67 receiving yards and four receptions.

“It is important that those guys can contribute and you’re right, (Dee) Eskridge is really starting to get comfortable and he shows you the explosiveness and toughness. He still shows the newness, but he’s doing well, good blocker, good aggressive blocker. Marquise (Goodwin) will continue to show in more areas. There’s nothing that he can’t do in the system and all that, but it’s hard when there are only so many guys out there that can play and so many balls that they can catch. But this opportunity, he will jump at it right now. There is no doubt that if DK (Metcalf) can’t go this weekend, those guys are going to play a bigger part. So, we are going to need them to come through.”

ANOTHER STELLAR DEFENSIVE EFFORT

The Seahawk’s defense especially the  Dline had an outstanding effort in stopping another high-profile offense.

“I made a point with the fellas today about how aggressive we were on the line of scrimmage and in the running game. The guys did a really nice job from start to finish of aggressively attacking the line of scrimmage, which is where it all begins. The things that we have done in the last couple of weeks have really shown that it is really helping their play. It does carry over too, in the pass rush stuff because they have been aggressive in attacking which has made for more rush lanes and stuff, so everybody has kind of benefitted from that.”

One player defensive player  Carroll made a point to highlight was  Safety Ryan Neal.   Neal finished the game with seven tackles one interception and four pass defenses.

“His numbers yesterday, he had seven tackles and four pass breakups. He was all over the football. He has been playing really well and I’m really fired up. He was as sick as a dog yesterday; he had the IVs and the whole thing. He was really sick as he woke up in the morning and he made it through anyway. Sometimes, there are some famous stories about terrific performers getting the best on the day when they are sick, and this was one of them. He had a great day. He just continues to be really active; his confidence is really growing, we are putting him in some good spots for him to produce, and he has really taken to it. He is doing great.”

ON KENNETH WALKER III

Rookie running back Kenneth Walker III had his best day as a pro against the Chargers rushing for 168 yards on 23 carries and scoring two touchdowns. One was on an electrifying 74 hard run down the sidelines.

“He’s pretty natural. He’s natural at the job description. His attitude is really strong. He just wants to stay on the field, he doesn’t want to come off. He’s not looking for a break. Toughness, elusive, creativity, and his speed is incredible. He’s got all of the elements that we are looking for and I thought that was a good game for him. He had 20 carries and he looked comfortable, and he picked and chose his moments to bust. He did a lot of instinctive, cool things. He’s just getting started. He hasn’t done anything twice yet. It’s really positive for us.”

OTHER NOTABLE QUOTES

(On the speed of his team being a key factor for the team’s performance)

“I think all of the guys that you mentioned (Tariq Woolen, Xavier Crawford, Joey Blount, Kenneth Walker III) have made plays for us and have stood out. It’s pretty obvious that these guys are fast, and they can make stuff happen and they can chase things down. They’re explosive, have suddenness. All of them have shown up. Joey Blount in particular, the guy who came here as a free agent, has had a really good start even though he missed a game. As soon as he jumped back out there, he made a bunch of tackles and he’s a factor for us. He’s working to get some playing time too. It’s great that the guys are doing a good job. They are on the roster for gameday, so we have to make sure those guys are available if we need them. It just helps in terms of production and the elusiveness and stuff like that. Everybody is running and everybody is going. It’s a defensive coach’s best friend. They can run and those guys make up for stuff and miscues and things like that with their speed.”

(On Bruce Irvin’s performance)

“ He did well. He did a good job. He jumped right in, and he made a play right off the bat. He was aggressive, he got close a couple times in the rush. It was a really, really good first outing for him. He felt good about it, timing was there, and it wasn’t a big jump for him at all. He was ready to go.”

(On the false start penalty with Austin Blythe)

“They said that he influenced a guy to jump offsides with his movement and so that is why they called a penalty on us. So, he was doing something that he always does. It was a normal movement for us, but that was the way they saw it. Not to complain, that’s the way they called it.”

(On if they will run more ‘Nickel’ due to the play of Coby Bryant)

“Yeah, it depends, there are different reasons. It depends on what other guys are doing, if they are trying to run the football or if they are not trying to run the football. That can dictate some stuff. We do things to change up, we try to use our guys where they can interchange and play different spots, but we play the same stuff, so it’s not a burden on the learning, yet we can utilize different players in different situations. Coby (Bryant) has enough flexibility to him that Coby can make the tackles in the running game, can come off of the edge and pressure, and he’s really improving in his understanding in the nickel position, so he’s just getting better. Remember too that he is the guy that went three or four games in a row of knocking the ball out, so we want him out there because you don’t know when he is going to get the next one. It depends on the individual players, and it also depends on what is going on in the game, so it’s a variety of things that dictate that.”

On if their three top tight ends have comparable skill sets)

“In the sense that we rely on them, and they interchange their roles, we do specific things in our gameplan for guys so that they can get prepared, but all three guys can catch, and all three guys are blocking. It’s a marvelous position group for us. I don’t know if I talked enough about Colby (Parkinson), but he had a terrific game. He had some great blocks in this game and his effort was physical, tough, as well as catching and running. We really feel comfortable and know that we have a variety of them. We are not going to stick them in roles where this guy only does this, and this guy does that. We don’t want that to happen, we want to be versatile with these guys because they can, and just to make it difficult for the opponent too.”
