Rashaad Penny’s Season is over with Broken Fibula

Seahawks head coach  Pete Carroll confirmed the worst-case scenario regarding running back Rashaad Penny’s injury. The fifth-year running back suffered a leg injury in the third quarter of the Seahawk’s game against the New Orleans Saints last Sunday. On Monday Carroll announced that Penny would miss the rest of the season.

For Penny the injury spells another heartbreaking end to a promising season. Drafted 27th overall in  2018 Penny suffered a torn  ACL in 2019 and returned for just three games in the 2020 season. The injuries continued in 2021  with Penny seeing time on the injured reserve list due to a calf ailment.  Penny was activated from the IR on October 21st and he started the last five games of the 2021 season and led the NFL in rushing with 671. Seeing promise and believing the injuries were behind him the Seahawks re-signed Penny to a one-year $5.75 million deal that included more than  $5 million in guarantees

ANOTHER PROMSING START

Before Sunday’s heart-breaking injury Penny was off to his best in his career. Against the Lions, Penny rushed for  151 on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns.  On Sunday Penny had rushed for 54 yards on eight carries for an impressive 6.8 average.  His five-game totals were 346 yards on 57 carries and two touchdowns. Numbers aside the injury means another long and hard road for Penny.

“It’s really a heartbreaker for a kid who has really bounced back into the limelight of our program,” Carroll said. “He’s been through such a long haul, it’s really just a heartbreaking loss for him. He’s been doing great and everybody can see it, and we’ve been so excited for him. He’s going to miss the rest of this year. He’ll come back, he’ll be able to play again and all of that. It’s a really clear surgery process and all of that, but it just does take a long time.”
