Quick reactions from the Seahawk’s 48-45 shootout win over the Lions

The Seahawks won an epic offensive battle. The Hawk’s 48-45 win over the  Detroit Lions was the highest-scoring game of the season. The offense made the plays it needed to make while the defense had some good plays and some not-so-good plays.   When the dust settles the Hawks will take a win any way they can. Here are some quick takes from the games

THE OFFENSIVE LINE IS JELLING

No, they did not play penalty-free football but give credit to the Seahawk’s young offensive line. While the maturation of rookie tackles Charles Cross and Abe Lucas is excruciatingly slow but there is progress. Good things are happening. The Seahawks amassed 555 offensive yards, fifth best in club history, and scored on their first four drives of the game. A missed field goal would have made it five.  A season-best 9 of 12 3rd down ratio and an 8.8 yard per play is all the evidence to prove the point.

GENO SMITH CONTINUES TO SHINE

Geno Smith’s command of the offense is another big reason for the offensive explosion. With an O-line that was playing its best, Smith was able to change the play and check down multiple times. The Seahawks offense had ten chunk plays, (plays that are over ten yards) today and half of those were check downs by Smith.  Both of Rashaad Penny’s big third-down runs took advantage of an overly aggressive Detroit defense that blitzed  45 % of the time.

Smith was in a zone for most of the day, scoring three touchdowns, two passing, and one running. His numbers were astronomical,  23/30 for 320 and a QB rating of  132.6. His seven carries and 49 yards trailed only Rashaad Penny’s 17 carries for  151 yards and two touchdowns. Penny s’ contribution cannot be underrated. His big runs were the difference maker late in the game.

DK Metcalf A Man Few Words

Going into the game Dk Metcalf was misquoted I can say that because I was in the room when he said that Lions cornerback Jeff Okuda was a good player but not a shutdown corner who relied on help from the free Safety.  Talk show hosts in Detroit and Seattle misquoted Metcalf attributing him to the quote that Okuda was not a good player. Well after  Sunday it Metcalf’s actions spoke for themselves. He finished the day with 7 receptions for 149 averaging 21.3 yards per catch. The several times Okuda and Metcalf were matched up one-on-one Metcalf left the Lions defender chasing a ghost.

DEFENSE SOME GOOD SOME BAD

Seahawks rookie cornerbacks  Tariq  Woolen and Coby Bryant kept pace with their two rookie offensive counterparts.  Just like the rookie tackle growth the  Woolen and Bryant have to take their lumps and Sunday their fortunes turned. Woolen registered his first   NFL pick-six to begin the second half.  Bryant knocked the ball out of Lions receiver Kalif Raymond’s hands after a reception.  Jordy Brooks recovered the fumble and the Seahawks offense cashed in four players later. Uchenna Nwosu had another outstanding day at the edge. Recording his second sack of the season and three tackles.

THE NOT SO GOOD

The Seahawk’s defense gave up ten chunk plays. The top three were a  Jared Goff to T.J  Hockenson completion for 81 yards on 1st and 20 from the Lions 15 yard line. The second was a Jamal Williams 51-yard run straight up the belly of the Seahawks defense on 2nad 7 from the Lions 49-yard line. The third and I will stop there was another Goff to Hockenson completion. The completion was a 32-yard touchdown from the Seattle 32-yard line. For the record Hockenson finished the day with 8 receptions for  179 yards and two touchdowns.

The Seahawk’s defense gave up 520 yards, and never stopped the Lion’s offense when it entered the red zone or on fourth down. The Lions were 4-4 in the red zone and 3-3 on fourth down attempts.

DK BATHROOM BREAK

One of the lighter moments in the game was  Metcalf leaving the game on a cart for a bathroom break.
