Three Observations Following Washington’s 52-6 Win Over Portland State

SEATTLE – It was another rinse and repeat performance Saturday as Kalen DeBoer and UW coasted to its second consecutive victory at home.

The Huskies (2-0, 0-0) jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first half against Portland State and kept the Vikings out of the end zone for the 52-6 win.

Receivers Route Vikings

For the first time since 2016 UW had two wide receivers reach the 100-yard mark in a single game. Junior receiver Giles Jackson led the team with 105 yards on six catches, his first career 100-yard game.

Sophomore Jalen McMillan notched his second triple-digit yards game hauling in four catches for 127 yards and an 84-yard touchdown with just over 11 minutes to go in the first half. It marks the second time in his career that McMillan has hauled down at least one touchdown in consecutive games.

McMillan had to step up after fellow starter Rome Odunze was kept out of the game after the sophomore went through warmups. Odunze was in pads on the sideline and isn’t expected to miss time moving forward in the season.

Trice the Charm

From the opening series it was evident that sophomore edge rusher Bralen Trice was going to make an impact against Portland State. After recording one tackle for loss in the opener against Kent State last weekend Trice followed that up with two and a half Saturday against the Vikings, a team high.

Trice forced an intentional grounding on the opening series and made sure he was in the face of Dante Chachere all afternoon. He also was credited with 1.5 sacks against Portland State to go along with his two tackles for loss.

In addition, defensive lineman Voi Tunuufi and linebacker Alphonzo Tuputala each recorded a sack with the UW team being credited with four total.

Irvin Just What the Doctor Ordered

As expected, senior cornerback Jordan Perryman did not suit up against Portland State after suffering a leg injury in the third quarter against Kent State. In his place was junior Julius Irvin, who wasn’t tested much against the Vikings.

Perryman is slated to return for the final non-conference game of the season against Michigan State. The Huskies held their opponent to just 50 yards passing on 6 of 17 attempts by Dante Chachere, the fewest completions the defense has allowed since Michigan last season.

In addition to getting Perryman back next Saturday, UW is also expected to gain redshirt freshman cornerback Elijah Jackson back after missing the first two games due to injury.
