Pete Carroll after sets preliminary 53-man roster, “a lot of moving parts”

The Seahawks announced their initial 53-man roster Tuesday afternoon meeting the NFL-mandated deadline. While there were some mild surprises the roster went the way most thought it would due to training camp performances.  The initial roster is somewhat fluid as teams can move players to injured reserve and claim players off the waiver list beginning Wednesday, August 31st.

BUSY DAY FOR COACHES AND PLAYERS

Head coach Pete Carroll met with the media to discuss the team’s roster move Tuesday after practice and as expected the day was bittersweet for Carroll and his coaching staff.

“A lot of stuff going on. It’s a big day in a lot of directions for guys; guys that don’t get to stay with us and guys that do make the club. It’s a big day for coaches and scouts and players and all that. Treat it with respect and all and try to make it as clear as possible where everybody stands as we go through the process. So, that’s what we have been working on allday.”

IMPRESSIVE DRAFT CLASS

Seven of Seattle’s nine draft picks made the team: Charles Cross, Boye Mafe, Kenneth Walker III, Abraham Lucas, Coby Bryant, Tariq Woolen and Dareke Young. The only picks not making the team were fifth-round pick Tyreke Smith, who was placed on injured reserve, and seventh-round pick Bo Melton, who figures to be a practice squad candidate should he clear waivers

 UNDRAFTED ROOKIES

In addition to the outstanding performances by the Seahawks drafted rookies undrafted rookies safety Joey Blount and outside linebacker Joshua Onujiogu, made a lasting impression and made their way onto the initial 53-man rosters. Heed coach Peter Carroll highlighted their achievements during Tuesday’s press conference.

“Joey (Blount) had a great camp. He just had a great camp and made plays on special teams which was where it really started. It’s a classic illustration of the guy; making some noise on (special) teams. And we look at him to see if he can support and help us in the position. And he did a really good job at that as well. But I give it to him on special teams that really won him his spot. Josh (Onujiogu) was just really consistent and brought it and did a nice job and surprised us that he was able to stay in the competition throughout all this time. We got a couple guys here that we are looking at that we’ve got to make sure everybody is healthy. Congratulations to both those guys.”

TOUGH DECISION

While pretty much every personnel decision is tough for coaches, Carroll was reflective and somber when asked about the decision to release Marquise Blair. The former second-round pick in the 2019 draft had a tough time this summer breaking into the team’s defensive rotations.

“Sure yeah. He’s a really good ball player and tough kid and all that. In one sense it’s hard to break in here, you we’ve got really good players and he’s a guy that wants to play the game as much as anybody. Very intense about it and this gives him an opportunity to have a chance to start somewhere. So, he’s a nice ball player and he’s tough as hell and we loved him, so we wish him the very best and the door is always open.”
