Drew Lock’s positive test for COVID-19 puts the Seahawks QB battle in flux

Less than two hours after head coach Pete Carroll told the media at Tuesday’s post-practice media press conference that Drew Lock would start Thursday’s game against the Bears,  the team announced that Lock had tested positive for COVID 19.

SEAHAWKS  QUARTERBACK COMPETITION TAKES AN UNEXPECTED TURN

Tuesday was the first practice that Lock started to practice with the number one offense. Carroll said that Lock starting Thursday’s game was part of the plan all along.

“Regardless of what happened, we were going to give Drew a chance to start a game and just see what happens,” Carroll said. “And fortunately, he’s played really well and he deserves a shot to play just like everybody deserves a shot to play and show what they can do. So we’ve just been able to stick to it.”

The positive test for Lock means he will have to isolate for five days in accordance with CDC guidelines and followed by the NFL. The earliest Lock could return to the team would be Sunday.

While there is no mandatory testing requirements by the NFL this season players can voluntarily test for COVID-19 if they are experiencing mild symptoms.

QB COMPETITION THURSDAY  AND BEYOND

Carroll will address the media on Wednesday afternoon and the likely scenario is that Geno Smith will be the starter and former Husky QB Jacob Eason will be the backup. Eason has been practicing with the number three offense so how much time he will see on Thursday is uncertain.

The Seahawk’s third and final preseason game will be on Aug. 26 at Dallas.  Any health complications aside Lock could start that game so the coaching staff can see how he plays as a starter. After that game, the Seahawks will have about two weeks before the home opener against the Denver Broncos on Sept 12. That would the coaching staff plenty of time to name the starter and prepare him for the Broncos game.

OFFENSIVE LINE PRAISE

Before the Lock test results were announced  Carroll was asked about the play  of his offensive line.

INJURY UPDATES

During his pre-conference, Carroll announced that rookie Ken Walker III missed practice due a hernia.

“a little hernia thing that he’s working on, and we’ve got to get through that. It’s something we can attend to and all that, we’ve just got to make sure that he’s OK by the opener. That’s what we’re shooting for.”

Other players who did not practice included tackle Jake Curhan( back spasms), Dee Eskridge  ( hamstring), and Marquis Goodwin ( hamstring) .

Carroll said Eskridge won’t play in Thursday’s game but he is really close after taking some walkthrough reps. According to Carroll Goodwin should be ready for the opener.

GOOD NEWS

The good news on the injury front saw the return of running back Rashaad Penny, lb Jordyn Brooks, cornerback Sidney Jones IV, and receiver Freddie Swain.
