The Seahawks beefed up their receiving corps and special teams units Monday afternoon when they agreed to trade Ugo Amadi to the Eagles and receive J.J. Arcega- Whiteside.
The deal makes sense for the Seahawks who had been rumored were going to release Amadi after he had requested the release. Amadi saw just 19 snaps at free safety and seven on special teams in the Seahawk’s preseason loss to the Steelers Saturday night.
OFFSEASON ACQUISITION AND PROMISING ROOKIE PLAY
Amadi was the Seahawk’s starting nickel back last year but has been in a tight three-way competition with off-season pick-up Justin Coleman and rookie Coby Bryant during training camp. The limit snaps during the Steelers game were a clear indication that Amadi was behind Bryant and Coleman. Bryant started at cornerback and saw 40 total snaps and 19 at nickel. Bryant saw four snaps on special teams while Coleman saw 11 defensive snaps and four on special teams.
ABUNDANCE OF TALENT IN THE DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD
Another reason that made Amadi expendable has been the play of rookie cornerback Tariq Woolen who has been pushing Sidney Jones IV and Artie Burns for playing time. Jones IV and Burns have been the starters during training camp but sat out the Steelers game. Woolen started alongside Bryant and participated in 44 defensive snaps and five special teams. The play of Michael Jackson who is in his second season with Seattle and fourth in the league was another factor the Seahawks could part ways with Amadi a former fourth-round draft in 2019 Jackson participated in 31 defensive snaps and 15 special teams.
ARCEGA-WHITESIDE IS A BIG RECEIVER NEEDING A CHANCE
Arcega-Whiteside was also drafted in 2019 in the second round seven spots ahead of DK Metcalf. The 6-2 237-pounder should give a boost to the Seahawks on special teams and maybe regain the magic he had coming out of college. Arcega- Whiteside played on 54 percent of the Eagle’s special team’s snap last season.
After a 63 catch 1,059-yard ad 14 touchdown year at Stanford in 2018 Acerga- Whiteside declared for the 2019 draft. Unfortunately for Acerga- Whiteside, his numbers with the Eagles were well below expectations. In his three years with the Eagles, the former Cardinal had just 16 receptions for 290 yards and 13 touchdowns. Last year Arcega-Whiteside had just two receptions for 36 yards and two touchdowns.
SEAHAWKS IN NEED OF DEPT AT WIDE RECEIVER
The Seahawks are very thin at the wide receiver position after placing Cody Thompson on the injured reserve list after he suffered a shoulder injury in the Steelers game. Dee Eskridge, Marquis Goodwin, and Freddie Swain are all dealing with injuries and have been unable to participate in training camp.
