Mariners: Ty France gets the call up for his first MLB All-Star game

The Mariners will now have two players representing them at the All-Star game, with Ty France getting the call on Sunday to join Julio Rodriguez in Los Angeles.

When the rosters for this year’s All-Star game where originally announced, there were a lot of Mariners coaches, players and fans who wondered why Ty France didn’t get selected. This omission was at least partly rectified on Sunday, with France being added to the American League All-Star roster.

The 28-year-old got the call as an injury replacement for Angels center fielder Mike Trout. As much as it is a shame Trout won’t be taking part, France deserves to be involved in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic at Dodger stadium.

It has often been said that France can just plain hit and he’s proved this time and again, since being traded to the Mariners in August 2020. This season has seen him take it to another level and he is on course to have career year.

In terms of qualifying first basemen in the AL, France has more than held his own. Heading into Sunday, he was second in batting average, third in OBP, tied for third in hits and RBI, as well as fourth in OPS.

France is solid on defense, although he would probably be the first one to admit he still needs to improve. It is his hitting and offensive IQ which will always have him in the lineup however, and you can even go as far to say he still has some upside.

There was some concern about France, with him initially hitting poorly when he recently returned from a Grade 2 flexor strain in his left elbow. It was likely just a case of him shaking off the rust though, as evidenced by having eight hits and four RBI in his last four games (including Sunday).

The Downey, California native will join fellow first-timer Julio Rodriguez in Los Angeles. It represents the first time the Mariners have had multiple All-Star representatives since 2018.

France will also be the first Mariner to make the All-Star Game as a first baseman since John Olerud in 2001. It is thoroughly deserved for a player who has come a long way, since being selected in the 34th round of the 2015 MLB draft by the San Diego Padres.

Now in his fourth year in the Majors, France has career figures of 39 home runs and 167 RBI, along with a slash line of .288/.359/.445. With the Mariners specifically, he has 30 homer and 133 RBI, with a slash line of .297/.370/.451. (All figures prior to Sunday’s contest.)

Are there any other Mariners who you think should also be headed to this year’s All-Star game? Let us know in the comments section below.
