Julio Rodrigues wins second consecutive AL rookie of the month award

Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez has been named American League Rookie of the Month for June. It is his second consecutive Rookie of the Month award.

The 21-year-old becomes the first Mariners player to win back-to-back Rookie of the Month awards since Ichiro Suzuki did it twice in 2001 (April-May, Aug.-Sept.). Julio is the first AL player to win back-to-back Rookie of the Month awards since Houston’s Yordan Alvarez won 3-consecutive in 2019 (June-Aug.).

Rodríguez becomes just the 2nd Mariner to win multiple Rookie of the Month awards, joining Ichiro Suzuki (4x in 2001). This is the 9th instance of a Mariner winning the award, with Rafael Soriano (Aug. 2003), Michael Pineda (April 2011) and Mike Carp (Aug. 2011) the other Mariners winners.

The Domincan-born outfielder led AL rookies in virtually every offensive category in June, including fWAR (1.4), wRC+ (162), hits (30), runs (22), home runs (7), RBI (16), total bases (58) and times on base (44) while ranking tied for the AL rookie lead in stolen bases (5).

Rodríguez hit the first of three-consecutive home runs on June 21 at Oakland, teaming up with Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suárez to accomplish the feat. The back-to-back-to-back home runs marked the 4th instance of three-consecutive home runs in franchise history, and first since Miguel Olivo, José Lopez and Hiram Bocachica accomplished the feat on Aug. 27, 2004 against the Kansas City Royals.

Julio tallied 9 multi-hit games and had two separate 3-hit efforts on June 17 and June 21. He hit home runs in back-to-back games twice: June 24-25 at Los Angeles-AL and June 29-30 against Baltimore and Oakland.
