With uncertainty surrounding the health of center Mercedes Russell and blossoming superstar Ezi Magbegor playing a high number of minutes each game, the Storm added some much-needed depth. The team signed unrestricted free agent center Tina Charles to the rest of the season Charles is a nine-time All-WNBA selection—including five times as a first-team pick, an eight-time all-star, and was the 2012 WNBA MVP.
Charles has been one of the WNBA’s top scorers over her 12 seasons in the league, leading the WNBA in scoring in 2016 and 2021 and ranking second all-time in 20+ point games with 164. Charles also ranks sixth in league history with 6,889 career points and is just seven shy of moving up to fifth on that list.
In addition, Charles ranks second in career rebounds with 3,507, leading the league in rebounding four times and ranking in the top five in nine of 11 seasons in the league.
A UCONN THING
The signing of Charles adds another former UConn player to the Storm roster.
Charles joins fellow former Huskies Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Gabby Williams. After leaving UConn as a two-time national champion, Charles was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2010 and played with the Connecticut Sun for four seasons before joining the New York Liberty.
The signing of Charles means the Storm now has four former first-round picks on the squad.
