Seahawk re-sign Quandre Diggs, Al Woods, Sidney Jones, and Will Dissly on day one of the free agency period

After jettisoning two of the club’s most productive and beloved players last week the Seahawks wasted no time in attempting to rebuild trust and confidence with the 12s.

With Russell Wilson traded to the Denver Broncos and Bobby Wagner straight-up released last week. The Seahawks were one of the busiest teams on day one of the NFL’s free agency period.

The Seahawks re-signed safety Quandre Diggs, defensive tackle Al Woods, cornerback Sidney Jones and tight end Will Dissly. Diggs signed a three-year $40 million dollar contract, Woods’s deal was for two years $9million deal, while Dissly settled for a three-year $24 million contract. Jones was the only one to sign for a single year at $3.6 million.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

With Seahawks Nation still reeling from last week’s moves, General Manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll know they have to move quickly to begin to repair faith, trust and instill hope. Not the best of examples but most appropriate. Imagine two parents getting a divorce and the kids are living with whoever won the custody battle. In this case Schneider and Carroll. Would not be the best time to bad-mouth the other parent. So, you do the next best thing. Show your good side and give kids the candy.

The signing of Diggs was a must for Schneider and Carroll. Diggs led the team in interceptions last year and was a quiet but respected leader inside the locker room. He was the closest thing to a Bobby Wagner. A leader on and off the field who has earned back-to-back Pro Bowl nominations. When Diggs suffered a dislocated ankle and a broken fibula in the Hawk’s last game at Arizona many wondered if the unfortunate injury would affect his value with the Seahawks. The answer is a straight no. The Diggs and Jamal Adams combo gives the Seahawks one of the best safety tandems in the NFL.

THIRD TIME IS A CHARM

For Woods, the third time with the Seahawks paid dividends for him and the team. Woods had arguably his best year as a pro in  2021 starting all 16 games,  recording 26 tackles and 1.5 sacks. The return of Woods means he will partner up with Poona Ford for another year. Despite other defensive deficiencies, Woods and Ford helped the Seahawks allow just 3.8 rushing yards per game which tied the Hawks for second best in the NFL. The addition of Shelby Harris who came over via the Wilson trade means Carroll is dead set on stopping the run and blitzing whenever possible. Jones started 11of 16 games last year after the Hawks picked him up in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 31st. The former Husky seems to be what the Hawks are looking for in cornerback back. Deep coverage skills with a  sense of where the ball is at all times and react to it.

CONSISTENCY EARNS PAYDAY

After back-to-back injuries in 2018 and 2019 that ended both seasons prematurely, Dissly rebounded with a career year in 2020. Setting personal bests in receptions (24) and yards (231). While his numbers were slightly lower in 2021, 21 receptions and 231 yards, and one touchdown Dissly started a career-high 14 games. With Dissly in the fold, you have to wonder if Gerald Everett will be returned. Noah Fant arrived in the Wilson trade, so you have to think the Seahawks have plans for him.
