Redhawks Split WAC Home Games

The Seattle University women’s basketball team returned home this week for a pair of Western Athletic Conference (WAC) games. The Redhawks came home after going 0-3 on their three-game WAC road trip, losing by double digits at Utah Valley, Stephen F Austin, and Sam Houston State. This week offered two chances for the Redhawks to break their losing streak and attempt to salvage something positive out of this season. On Thursday, Feb 3, they entered the game against Grand Canyon with a 6-13 overall record and a 1-8 mark in conference play.

The Losing Continues

Throughout the season, the team has struggled to score points consistently. As a result, they have faced challenges keeping up with good shooting teams and in multiple instances failed to get that clutch game-tying or winning bucket at the end of the game.

On Feb 3, the Redhawks lost to Grand Canyon by a final score of 64-59, their fifth straight loss. In this game, the Redhawks fourth-quarter comeback fell short. Despite having more than one possession with a chance to tie the game, the Redhawks failed to make the big shot. They were led by Senior guard Bree Calhoun, who spearheaded the comeback by scoring 11 of her 17 points in the final quarter. Junior forward Georgia Kehoe also had a good game, accumulating 10 points and seven rebounds. Amara Graham and Tiana Brown led the Antelopes with each scoring 14 points, yet the Redhawks held Graham scoreless after the first quarter.

The Redhawks Finally Emerge Victorious

The Redhawks rebounded from their loss on Thursday to defeat the New Mexico State Aggies Saturday, Feb 5.  The 81-73 win stopped their five-game skid. The Redhawks got off to a good start and went into halftime with the lead, which they had for the majority of the contest.

While their active defense forced 21 Aggie turnovers, problems rebounding and foul trouble at the end of the game played a big part in New Mexico State being able to come back and force overtime. That led to a brief momentum shift. However, Seattle U quickly righted the ship and dominated the overtime period. The electric duo of McKenzi Williams and Bree Calhoun each finished the game with 25 points, a season high for Williams and career high for Calhoun. On the other side, the Aggies kept feeding the ball to Bigue Sarr who led their comeback efforts scoring 22 points. These two teams will match up again at New Mexico State Feb 8.
