EXPERIMENTAL LINE UP

The first 60 minutes featured a starter-heavy lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation. The only non-First Team players were the outside backs, with Tacoma Defiance’s Joe Hafferty and Randy Mendoza playing alongside Yeimar and AB Cissoko in the back.

The next 30 minutes shifted to a 5-4-1 formation that was anchored by First Teamers Will Bruin, Sam Adeniran, and Stefan Cleveland. That group mostly featured recent SuperDraft selections and Sounders Academy/Tacoma Defiance players.

Seattle had numerous chances at goal, the first coming midway through the first half when a cross that came in from the left side nearly found the feet of a sliding Dylan Teves. Albert Rusnák’s cross in the 59th minute was able to find the head of Kelyn Rowe, who put a shot on frame into the hands of the Timbers goalkeeper. Seattle’s best chance of the night came in the 72nd minute when Sam Adeniran ran down the right flank and crossed a ball into the area that was deflected twice in front of the Portland goal before being cleared.

The Sounders will stay in the desert sun for another six days and take on the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, February 1st. The Rave Green will return to Seattle for a week then depart for Palm Springs on February 8th.
