Another Inexplicable Loss By The Seahawks

What is frustrating is not that the Seahawks don’t have the right game plan. That they most certainly do. That is why it’s so frustrating to be a Seahawks fan.  With patience and forgiveness long gone all that is left for a disheartened 12 is rage, self-pity, and the continued question of why?

After the Seahawks gut-wrenching 25- 24 loss to the Chicago Bears in a snow bleached Lumen Field, the post-game press conference was filled with talk about accountability, execution, and getting better.  All sounds good but for heaven’s sake, there is only two more games left in a 5-10 season. Yes, that is no misprint the Seahawks are 5-10.

PICK YOUR POISION

There are countless examples as to why the Seahawks have been unable to turn this season around. The examples really boil down to a lack of concentration which is hindering their ability to execute. Too many penalties in critical situations followed by a lack of execution.

The Seahawks played a complete first half and went into the break with a comfortable-looking 17-7 lead. After trading touchdowns in the third quarter, the Seahawks lost their concentration, composure, and wit in the fourth quarter.

With the team nursing a 17-24  lead with 7:08 left in the game, Jason Myers missed a 39-yard field which gave the ball back to the Bears. The defense held the Bear’s offense and forced a punt. The offense squandered yet another opportunity to ice the game when a holding penalty stymied the 5-play possession forcing another punt.

DEFENSE LONG ON THE TOOTH

Another recurring theme that has been hanging around all season has been the defense’s inability to quickly get off the field. An end result is a leg-weary unit that like the offense makes mental mistakes due to the physical fatigue. Speaking of rage and bewilderment, the Bears received the ball at their own 20-yard line with  2:56 left in the game and down seven points.

EYE SCRATCHING SERIES

On the Bear’s first play from their own 20-yard line, Nick Foles connected with Darnell Mooney for an inexplicable 30 yard gain. Add another 15 yards on the play for a penalty on Darrell Taylor for roughing the quarterback and you have a 45-yard play. A Carlos Dunlap sack on Foles for minutes three yards only delayed the invertible. A Foles to former Seahawks tight end Jimmy Graham for a 15-yard touchdown on 3rd and 14th.  A successful Foles to  Damiere Byrd two-point pass try gave the  Bears a 25-24 lead.

INSULT TO INJURY

In another one of those I must close my eyes I can’t bear it scenarios; the Russell Wilson and the offense were given one more chance. With 53 seconds left and the ball at its own 27-yard line. Lucky are the 12 ‘s who turned their heads. The Seahawks ran six plays three of which had to be re-played due to penalties against the offense and defense.  On 4th 5 from the Seahawks 32-yard line, Wilson’s pass intended for Tyler Lockett ended on the snowy turf.  Unfortunately, the result is what Seahawk fans have come to expect. Another gut-wrenching loss.
