Kalen DeBoer Named Next  Husky Football Coach

Several days after suffering their worst Apple Cup loss the University of Washington  Athletic Department named a new head coach with the intention of moving on and rebuilding a program that was on the verge of imploding.  Monday afternoon UW Director of Athletics Jen Cohen announced that  Kalen DeBoer would be the program’s 30th coach.

DeBoer, 47, comes to Montlake from Fresno State, where during the 2021 season, he led the Bulldogs to a 9-3 overall record in his second year in charge.  An offensive guru DeBoer will be saddled with ensuring that  Sam Huard will reach his galactic expectations. While he will not be the offensive coordinator DeBoer is sure to take an active role in the rebuilding of the  Husky team and specifically the offense.

EXPERIENCED IN MULTIPLE ROLES:

Over his seven seasons as a head football coach, DeBoer has compiled a 79-9 (.898) record. During his 25 years in coaching, he has consistently prospered at multiple levels and in different roles, helping to build and revitalize programs while establishing a diverse network of contacts, in both coaching and recruiting, across the country.

“I could not be more excited to welcome Kalen and his wonderful family to the University of Washington,” said Cohen. “We set out to find the best fit for Husky football and we found an individual that exemplifies everything this program represents. Kalen is a winner and champion, plain and simple. He has succeeded at every stop because he does it the right way and is committed to a culture of excellence for Husky football student-athletes. His strong value alignment with our department, university and community will make all of Husky Nation proud.”

Prior to leading Fresno State, DeBoer was on staff at I Indiana University, as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. After helping to guide the Hoosiers to an 8-5 record and a berth in the Gator Bowl, DeBoer returned to Fresno State, taking over for Jeff Tedford, who resigned for health reasons following the 2019 season.

BIG TAKE

Deboer is a safe hire an old-fashioned ball coach who believes attitude is everything. A steady influence that will win more games than he loses. The question is how high can Deboer take the UW program? Yes, the Huskies should and will be in the hunt for the Pac-12 title on a regular basis. Can Deboer get the Huskies to compete for a National Title? If Washington is a perennial Pac-12 contender then the answer is yes. But in order to do that the Huskies have to compete with the likes of Oregon USC, and Utah’s for the top recruits in West and land a few National recruits. And without question keep the high touted in-state recruits at Washington.
