They Washington State Cougars ran every which way and loose in recording their most lopsided victory over the Washington Huskies on Saturday ‘s 103 Apple Cup Game. The 40-13 margin surpassed the 52-26 win by the Cougars in 1973 also in Seattle. The Cougars game plan going into the game which they executed with precise precision was quite simple.
Dominate the line of scrimmage and run the ball and run the ball and run the ball. No stroke of genius needed to formulate said strategy. The Huskies rush defense was regarded as one of the worst in the Conference going into the game and after the Cougars dominance some might say it’s one of the worst countries.
GROUND GAME SETS EARLY TONE
Cougar running back Max Borghi had his way with the Huskies defense rushing for 129 of the Cougars 209 yards. Borghi gashed the Husky defense for two touchdowns . The stout back ran inside, outside, and pretty much anywhere he wanted against the Dawgs porous defense. The Cougar’s offense exerted its dominance on the opening drive and never looked back. A 7 play 75-yard opening drive that ended with a 32-yard touchdown scamper by Borghi set the tone.
The dominating ground game made an easy day at the office for Cougar quarterback Jayden de Laura who connected on 21 of his first 22 pass attempts and finished 27 of 32 for 245 yards. The Huskies.
NO OFFENSIVE ANSWERS
The long-awaited unveiling of Sam Huard as a starter left more questions than answer. Huard’s first two drives stated from the 13-yard line and the 25-yard line. Both were punts, The third drive from his own 20-yard line saw the heir apparent to the quarterback throw one of his four interceptions. The Huskies offensive struggles did not start with Huard and to the despair and heartbreak of Husky Nation did not end with him. The Huskies managed just 200 offensive yards, 190 of which were passing yards. Yes, quick math reveals the Huskies had a mere 10 rushing yard and converted 4 of 11 third downs.
Huard showed some signs of brilliance in the fourth quarter when he lofted a pass deep in the corner endzone that hung in the air just long enough Rome Odunze to make a one-handed circus grab for a touchdown. The fourth quarter link up by the two freshmen narrowed the Cougars lead to 30-13 with 11:55 but in truthfulness the paly all prolonged the invertible . The Cougars tagged ten more points and snapped a seven-game losing streak.
BIG TAKE
Yes the Cougar fans danced on the Huskies crest after the game and some UW fans felt violated. It has been a long seven year drought since Cougar fans tasted the sweet taste of victory water in the Apple Cup. For their team to break the losing streak in convincing fashion? As they say the winner gets to write the story. The cold hard truth is the Cougars were the better team going into the game and Huskies were a mentally drained team. Both teams lost their head coaches When it happened and how it happened was the difference. The Cougars rallied around interim coach Jake Dickert who has the team bowl eligible and could see the team represent the Pac-12 North if the Pac12 Championship game if Oregon State beats Oregon in next Saturday show down.
PROGRAM TRAUMA
The Huskies former head coach Jimmy Lake was suspended for seven days for action unbecoming of a head coach towards one of his players . After the seven days suspension Lake was shown the door. Interim coach Bob Gregory was able to rally a united front physically but mentally the team was soul searching from the day Lake fired. That is not blame Lake for all of the Huskies issues. The Husky football Program has been on dramatic decline since the resignation of Chris Petersen. That would be the place to start . When glass breaks it shatters into a lot of pieces .
