Seattle Mariners Shuffle 40 Man Roster

The Mariners made the first of what is expected to be many rosters as the team enters its most important off-season. On Friday afternoon Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipito announced the following roster moves.

  • Sam Haggerty, INF/OF, outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Shed Long Jr., INF/OF, outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Darren McCaughan, RHP, outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Marcus Wilson, OF, outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Ljay Newsome, RHP, claimed off waivers by St. Louis.
  • Ryan Weber, RHP, outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma; Weber declined the outright and elected free agency.

Seattle’s 40-man roster is now at 37 players.

“The bottleneck of talent that we have right now, it’s getting crowded,” Dipoto said. “And we probably have more depth than we’ve ever had at least in our years here. And that’s what good teams have. They have that type of depth.”

Seattle’s 40-man roster now features the following:

  • 21 pitchers (+4 60-day IL)
  • 4 catchers
  • 6 infielders (+1 60-day IL)
  • 4 outfielders (+1 60-day IL)
  • 2 infielders/outfielders

Players currently on the 60-day Injured List will automatically be reinstated to club 40-man rosters 5 days after the conclusion of the World Series. Seattle currently has six players on the 60-day Injured List (see attached roster).

Clubs must add eligible minor league players to their 40-man rosters by Nov. 19 to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft.
