Sporting Kansas City ( 9-3-3, 30pts) forward  Johnny Russell scored a goal and had an assist to lead the razor-focused visitors to a commanding 3-1 win over the Seattle Sounders (9-5-2 32). The game matched the two best teams in the Western Conference and was to be a litmus test for both sides.

MORE  LINE UP CHANGES

Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer rotated five new players for the highly anticipated  Western Conference showdown. In addition to the lineup changes, the Sounders were playing their third game in a week. Hard to remember a more emotionally draining seven days for the Rave Green.  The Sounders saw their  MLS record-setting 13 game unbeaten streak snapped last Sunday at Minnesota. Four days later the Sounders pulled off an improbable 1-0 win at Austin FC after starting five teenagers.
