Storm win third consecutive road game with a staunch 89-66 defensive effort over the Connecticut Sun

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Storm had two first-half scoring runs to help break open the game: 12-4 in the first quarter to extend an 8-7 lead to 20-11, and 9-0 in the second to go from 29-22 to 38-22 up.
  • Although Connecticut closed the half on a 5-0 run to trim Seattle’s lead to 43-29, the Storm started the third quarter with an 8-2 burst, capped by a Sue Bird steal and coast-to-coast lay-In to take a 51-31 lead.
  • The Sun closed to within 14 at 64-50 early in the fourth, but the Storm effectively put it out of reach with seven-straight points started by Jordin Canada’s first three of the year.

KEY STATS OF THE GAME

  • Seattle held Connecticut to its lowest point total of the year (66). It was the Sun’s lowest point total since scoring 57 against Minnesota on Aug. 9, 2019.
  • The Storm forced 17 Connecticut turnovers and converted those into 28 points—scoring more in the game than its previous three combined. It was the most points off turnovers by Seattle this season and three shy of the most in the WNBA this season.
  • Seattle remained undefeated on the road (5-0) and handed Connecticut its first home loss (4-1).

STORM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Seattle got 43 points from its trio of UConn grads: 22 from Breanna Stewart, 13 from Sue Bird and 8 from Katie Lou Samuelson. Of the Storm’s first 23 points, 22 came that trio with Stewart scoring 10, Bird adding eight, and Samuelson scoring four. 
  • The Storm built a 19-point lead with a 22-10 run spanning nearly eight minutes, starting with a 27-footer by Stewart with 49.9 seconds left in the first and ending with a cutting layup by Jewell Loyd at the 2:03 mark of the second quarter.
  • All 12 Seattle players saw action, and all of them scored.
  • Kiana Williams scored her first four points as a WNBA player in one play as she was fouled on a 3-pointer. Williams, who made the three and converted the free throw. And, although she was on the opposite side of the country, it also was Williams’ graduation day from Stanford.
  • Seattle hit 4-of-7 (57.1%) from 3-point range in the first quarter, and finished 10-of-22 for the game—its third-straight outing with double-digit makes from downtown.

SUN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kaila Charles scored all of her 14 points in the fourth quarter, hitting 6-of-9 from the field.
  • DeWanna Bonner also had 14, plus a team-high five rebounds while Brionna Jones added 12 points.

MILESTONES

  • Sue Bird’s 3-pointer with 5:33 left in the game was the 906th of her career, which ties her with Katie Smith for the second-most in league history. Diana Taurasi of leads with 1,173 – and of course, she’s still playing.
  • Tonight’s game was the 480th career game for Candice Dupree, tying her with Lindsey Whalen for the fifth-most games played all-time.
