The Mariners announced the demotion of outfielder Jarred Kelenic to Triple-A Tacoma in hopes the promising prospect can find his swing. Infielder Shed Long Jr. was reinstated from the 60- day injured list after suffering a right shin stress fracture. Infielder Sam Haggerty was placed on the 60-day injured list due to inflammation in his right shoulder.
Long Jr., 25, appeared in 7 games on Major League rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma, batting .323 (10×31) with 8 runs, 3 doubles, 1 home run, 2 RBI and 5 walks. The infielder began the season on the 10-day Injured List and was transferred to the 60-day Injured List on April 27.
The Alabama native has appeared in 76 Major League games with Seattle (2019-20), batting .223 (60×269) with 31 runs, 17 doubles, 1 triple, 8 home runs, 24 RBI, 7 stolen bases and 27 walks. He made his Major League debut on May 11, 2019 at Fenway Park.
Long Jr. was acquired by the Mariners from the New York Yankees in exchange for minor league outfielder Josh Stowers on Jan. 21, 2019. Long Jr. was traded from Cincinnati to New York-AL earlier that day. He was originally selected by Cincinnati in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Jacksonville (AL) High School.
Kelenic, 21, was selected by the Mariners on May 13 and made his Major League debut that night against Cleveland. In his second career game on May 14 vs. Cleveland, the outfielder went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, 1 home run and 3 RBI.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound, outfielder is rated as the No. 4 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline and No. 1 in the Mariners organization. The Wisconsin native was acquired by the Mariners from the Mets along with Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista and Justin Dunn in exchange for Robinson Canó, Edwin Díaz and cash considerations on Dec. 3, 2018. In 23 games with Seattle this season, he is batting .096 (8×83) with 7 runs, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 8 walks, 26 strikeouts and 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
Kelenic was originally selected by the Mets with the 6th overall pick in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Waukesha West High School (WI), becoming the 7th Wisconsin native to ever be selected in the first round. Overall, he has appeared in parts of 3 minor league seasons in the Mets (2018) and Mariners (2019 & 2021) organizations, batting .293 (202×690) with 130 runs, 42 doubles, 11 triples, 31 home runs, 117 RBI, 79 walks and 37 stolen bases in 179 games.
Haggerty, 27, was placed on the 10-day Injured List on May 24. He has appeared defensively at left field (20 G, 15 GS), right field (6 G, 4 GS), second base (4 G, 1 GS) and center field (3 G, 2 GS), batting .186 (16×86) with 15 runs, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 RBI, 6 walks and 5 stolen bases in 35 games with Seattle this season.
Haggerty was originally selected by Cleveland in the 24th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of New Mexico. He made his Major League debut with the Mets on Sept. 4, 2019 at Washington. He was claimed off waivers by the Mainers from New York-NL on Jan. 10, 2020. Overall, in parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Mets (2019) and Mariners (2020-21), he is batting .207 (29×140) with 24 runs, 7 doubles, 3 home runs, 11 RBI, 10 walks and 9 stolen bases in 59 career games.
