Sounders FC announced the signing of defender Abdoulaye Cissoko to a one-year contract Friday afternoon ahead of the team’s cross-conference match with Atlanta United on Sunday afternoon. The signing of Cissoko was the second of two moves by the Rave Green made on Friday. Hours earlier the team announced that it had selected Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Thomas off waivers following the conclusion of the NCAA Men’s soccer season. While Thomas will unlikely to see action with the first team Cissoko could feature sooner than later.
PROMISING YOUNG PLAYER
The 6-3 175 French National joined the Sounders organization in 2019 and spent the 2020 season playing with the Tacoma Defiance before training with the first team at the start of this season.
Cissoko made 12 appearances for Tacoma during the 2020 campaign, including nine starts. He scored one goal, coming against Reno 1868 on September 18. The 21-year-old becomes the second Defiance player to sign with Sounders FC after training with the First Team this preseason, following Reed Baker-Whiting’s signing last week. Cissoko started Tacoma Defiance’s 2021 season opener on May 9 and scored a penalty kick in second-half stoppage time to force a road draw at LA Galaxy II.
