1) A club record for Seager
As is often the case with statistics, they can be manipulated to support any argument. For example, let’s say we want to make the case Kyle Seager is having a poor offensive season.
To do this, you could point to Seager’s batting average and OBP following the Tigers series. Both are the second-worst of his 11-year Major League career up to this point of the 2021 campaign.
However, let’s now flip the narrative and argue the 33-year-old is having a good season. Two such examples include his 13.9 percent barrel rate and 45.9 percent hard-hit rate, which are both career-bests up to this point of 2021.
Regardless of what perspective or opinion you have though, what we can say with certainty is that Seager put his name in the Mariners’ record books on Wednesday night. The moment came in the opening inning, when he provided some early hope with a homer and a 2-0 lead.
This represented the third baseman’s 84th home run at T-Mobile Park, the most for any player at the ball park. He was previously tied on 83 with Raul Ibanez and Nelson Cruz.
As reported by Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, Seager’s wife, Julie, tweeted a video of their daughter congratulating him shortly after the milestone home run. The clip was shown on the T-Mobile Park jumbotron during the fifth inning:
Seager was humble about his achievement, but did acknowledge it was a special moment. Speaking to the media after the game, he said:
“I think it means I’ve been here for a little while. I think the two guys I passed did it in a few years less than me, so I’ll take it.
“But it’s definitely an honor. It’s definitely something I’m extremely proud of; not something I thought I would kind of ever have.”
In a series with little for the Mariners and their fans to cheer about, Seager’s moment stands out even more. (As an interesting comparison, you will not be surprised to know Ken Griffey Jr. hit 198 home runs at the Mariners’ previous ball park, the Kingdome.)
