Mariners: Injury updates on James Paxton, Anthony Misiewicz and more

Even though the Mariners’ game on Monday in Baltimore was rained out, there was still plenty of news to provide on the injury front.

The Mariners were unable to build on the momentum gained during the weekend in Minnesota, as Monday’s game versus the Baltimore Orioles was rained off. They are scheduled to play a double-header on Tuesday at Camden Yards.

There was still plenty to discuss however, as the Mariners provided several injury updates. Understandably, the most eagerly anticipated update related to the status of James Paxton.

Unfortunately for everyone concerned, manager Scott Servais wasn’t able to add much to what had already been reported. All Servais could advise, was that Paxton had received a second opinion on his left forearm strain and the ball club was waiting for the result of that assessment.

The smart money would still seem to be on Paxton undergoing Tommy John surgery. However, you can certainly appreciate why he would want to take his time before making such an important decision.

There was some unexpected news too, as Anthony Misiewicz was placed on the injured list. The reason for the move was undisclosed by Servais.

However, it is important to note Misiewicz was not put on the 10-day IL. This means he should be able to return to action as soon as he is healthy again.

Regardless, any absence of the reliever is frustrating for the Mariners, as he has been excellent so far this season. He has given up five hits in 3.2 innings, but allowed no earned runs or walks, while recording two strikeouts.

Right-handed reliever Erik Swanson has been recalled to replace Misiewicz. Swanson has been traveling with the ball club as part of their five-man taxi squad.

The 27-year-old also has experience of being a starter in the Majors and this is his third season with the Mariners. He has a career ERA of 6.58 and a 1.234 WHIP, along with a 8.4/1.9 strikeouts/walks ratio per nine innings.

There was some encouraging news for the Mariners, as they confirmed the return of 2020 Golden Glove winner Evan White. The first baseman had been out with a left quad strain.

White is expected to go straight back into the starting lineup on Tuesday. The biggest thing for him now, is to show some improvement with his hitting.

Other injury updates

Kyle Lewis was placed on the 10-day IL prior to opening day, with a deep right knee bone bruise. It is possible the outfielder will return during the Mariners’ next homestand, between April 16-20.

Shed Long went on the 10-day IL, retroactive to March 29, with a right shin stress fracture. It is unclear at this stage when he will return.

Jake Fraley was placed on the 10-day IL on April 7, with a left hamstring strain. The Mariners are hoping he will return before the end of this month.

With the exception of Paxton, do any of the Mariners’ injuries cause you concern? What do you expect from White, now that he’s back on the roster? Let us know in the comments section below.
