Mariners walk to improbable 8-7 extra inning win over Giants to start season

GAME NOTES

  • Kyle Seager made his 8th Opening Day start (2013-18, ’20-21) at third base, extending his club record for most Opening Day starts at the hot corner.

o Seager’s double in the bottom of the 4th was the Mariners first hit of the night, snapping Gausman’s streak of 11 straight batters retired to start the game.

  • Marco Gonzales made his 3rd consecutive Opening Day start for the Mariners. The left-hander pitched 6.0 innings, allowing 5 earned runs on 8 hits and 3 home runs with 3 walks (1 intentional) and 2 strikeouts. He threw 99 pitches (58 strikes) and faced 27 batters.
  • Dylan Moore drove in the Mariners first run of the season on a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the 7th, scoring Evan White who doubled earlier in the inning.
  • Mitch Haniger singled in the 8th inning in his first Major League game since June 6, 2019 (665 days). It was his first hit since June 4, 2019 (667 days).
  • Taylor Trammell made his Major League debut, batting 5th and playing center field. He fouled out to third base on the very first pitch he saw off starter Kevin Gausman.

o Trammell threw out Evan Longoria trying to stretch a single into a double in the 4th inning, registering an 8-6 putout. It’s the first time a Mariners outfielder has recorded an outfield assist in his Major League debut since Mike Wilson did it on May 10, 2011 at Baltimore in his MLB debut. In that game, the left fielder Wilson threw out Baltimore’s J.J. Hardy at home plate in the 9th inning of a 5-5 tie…Miguel Olivo was the Mariners catcher on that play.

o Trammell went 0-for-3 with 2 walks, becoming the first Mariners player with multiple walks in his Major League debut since Bucky Jacobsen drew 2 walks in his debut on July 16, 2004.

  • Right-hander Will Vest also made his Major League debut for the Mariners tonight, striking out Longoria as the first batter he faced. Vest allowed 1 unearned run in 1.0 inning of work, allowing 1 hit with 1 walk, 1 strikeout and 1 wild pitch.
  • Right-hander Casey Sadler (1.0 IP, 2K) pitched a scoreless 7th, Vest pitched the 8th, righty Rafael Montero pitched the 9th and lefty Anthony Misiewicz pitched the 10th, recording his first career Major League victory. GIANTS NOTES:

• The Giants opened their 2021 season with an interleague series for the first time in franchise history, just like the Mariners.

o The Giants began the season away from San Francisco for the 12th straight season dating back to 2010, the longest active streak and the third-longest streak in the Majors since 1961.
