Seahawks Week Two free agency recap: defensive line shuffle and some added depth on the offensive line

OFFENSIVE LINE DEPTH

The return of Simmons adds depth to the Hawks offensive line. Simmons started six games last year and is a good insurance policy behind newly acquired guard Gabe Jackson and last year’s pleasant surprise third-round pick Damien Lewis. The LSU started all 16 games at left guard.

WHY IT MAKE SENSE

This is a no-brainer for the player and the club. The deal for Simmons has to be less than the $2.133 million it would have cost Seattle to tender him as a restricted free agent. Simmons is familiar with the Seahawks system and returning to Seattle gives him a chance to show his worth and ask for more money next year.

CEDRIC OGBUEHI  TACKLE

Like Simmons, Ogbuehi provides depth on the offensive line at the tackle position. Ogbuehi started four regular-season games last year and the playoff loss to the Rams. His overall performance was average and served a purpose. A good backup but not a 16 game starter.

WHY IT MAKES SENSE

A capable backup who knows the Seahawks system and can momentarily step in. The Seahawks pretty much got him on the cheap if Ogbuehi signed a contract similar to last year’s $2.3 million with a $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses. Look for the Seahawks to bring in a couple more offensive linemen via the draft of training camp invitee.
